Yes, Mata was offered purely because of his shirt number.

Jesus Christ.

Torres was a MASSIVE success commercially and 'brand wise' (the latter not being as measurable), why break a winning formula.

But of course a mere fan/punter 'joe bloggs from [insert Chelsea forum]' only sees it in football terms

If Ballack hadn't got his number 13, he would have never been a Chelsea player. Gallas left because Kenyon demanded he be stripped of it..

Well, I'd imagine the Mata 10 shirts sell well already.

If we do sign Rooney, I can't imagine much difference to his sales if he gets 10 or a different number.

You want us to get rid of our best player over the last two seasons and 10 million to sign a 27 year old.

Would the Rooney 10 shirts even cover the 10 million we'd give along with Mata? Along with the fact that if the deal did happen United would probably win the league, How would that fare for or revenue? Along with Chelsea fans who would be so angry they wouldn't buy any replica shirt?

I fail to see how selling Mata would be good for revenue.

If Mou sells Mata... I don't know... It's better he never came back then.

We may have to accept Mata has no place in Mourinho's system, as much as we all love Mata.. let's get a bit of perspective here. Mourinho is bigger than any player, we don't have a Bale, Ronaldo or Messi.. Mata is not of that calibre.

Only yesterday Mourinho was talking about having Mata in the team...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jul/16/jose-mourinho-chelsea-fernando-torres

I remember Valencia back when Mata was there. Unai Emery used to play a 4-2-3-1 system with Mata-David Silva-Joaquin/Pablo Hernandez as attacking mids and David Villa as a lone striker.

Mata was terrific as a RW/LW. This is how he got the attention of big clubs. He moved to AMC only after David Silva left for City. He was brilliant in his new position, too, but my point is, naturally, Mata is a winger and, although we have Schurrle, De Bruyne and Moses, I still think we need a better RW and Juan would fit perfectly in that position IMO.

Hazard - Rooney - Mata. Just imagine. This three wizards would be capable of killing any defence in this world.

With all due respect, but I see Schurrle more of a backup for Eden, I see Moses a backup for the RW, too and guys like Oscar and De Bruyne should be used as CM/AMC, their natural position. I think we've seen the difference between Oscar playing for Brazil and the one playing for Chelsea. He is terrific when playing for Brazil as AMC. He's miles better than the one playing as a RW for Chelsea, and Jose knows this.

Sign Rooney and De Rossi, have Mata playing as a RW and Oscar as AMC and this team would even discover new planets on it's way to glory.

I know you have a reputation here for being controversial on TC, but i think you should calm down a little. :sweating:

i am pissed off by these reports that we have offered either Juan or David. the fact BBC is reporting it gives some credibility to the point, and shows that whoever does the transfer offer, emenalo or jose or whatever that they haven't seen the awesoomeness which Mata has.

I dont care that every newspaper is reporting it, still doesnt mean its true. I think its total bullsh*t.

1. Why would Mou sell players he hasnt even met yet? And imo 2 of the 3 best in Chelsea?

2. Mata and Luiz alone are worth more than Rooney.

3. Mata/Luiz choice? With all respect to Luiz, I dont think anyone would choose him over Mata.

4. United rejected it? Then they must be even dumber than Chelsea - reportedly.
