KonohasOrangeFlash 2,607
Let's just get this clear and out of the way so that there are no more questions or uncertainties:Maicon would be coming in as back-up. I hope there are no doubts about that. Ivanovic will remain our number 1 right-back.If we were to buy someone like Debuchy, all that would do is push players like Todd Kane back even further away from a future starting role. Signing an older player as back-up is much better than signing a fresh, hungry motivated player for £10mil+ who will keep one of our most promising youth players out of our team for a decade.Maicon got ripped a new bumhole by Gareth Bale in the Champions League...but that was a one off. Players simply do not do that to Maicon. The tactics Inter used in the match were absolutely appalling in defence and midfield, and Maicon was told to keep on attacking, leaving acres of space behind for Bale to exploit.Maicon HAD to push forward constantly, as Inter were using a narrow formation and he was responsible for adding the width to the team. He's also had a very good season with Inter this past year (Personally, anyway. The team in general was rubbish.)He completely destroyed AC Milan too in the derby match! (I mean his overall performance, not just the wonderful goal.)Finally, surely no one can deny that the idea of having Maicon flying down the flanks vs. teams like Wigan or Championship teams in the F.A. Cup etc. sounds good! (Unless of course we do buy and out-and-out winger. This is where Ramires could come in handy though. We could have Maicon and Ramires pretty much switching positions through-out the game.)Don't worry. This would be a good signing. I'm really excited about the prospect of having Maicon. Everything you said was spot on. People who are concerned about Maicon being 'ripped apart' by quick wingers, fear not as that rarely happens to someone as good and experienced as Maicon. calculatingInfinity 1,477
He's soon to be 31...and you replied to "Yeah, he's no doubt an upgrade from Bosingwa, despite him having a pretty big drop of form while Inter as a whole also went down the shitter.", he was never really the same after Bale humiliated him and Inter just went to shit around that time, including him.But again, I would like him here. Chelsea does desperately need a second right back.
Tomo 21,751
Good post leif but i just want to say one thing I don't like the "blocking development" argument that get's used often. If they are good and patient enough they will force their way through in the end regardless of who we sign, Bertrand is the prime example of that, this time 2 years ago he was behind Cole, Zhirkov and Van Aanholt in the left back pecking order, now he is almost certain to be Cole's successor. Melanicus 5,208
This morning's somewhat-unexpected news that Sky Italia are reporting we're close to a deal with Inter to sign Maicon in the neighbourhood of £8m.
Waterfall 893
People are reading too much into his dreadful performance against Bale. Cole got owned by Valencia but is still one of the best if not the best LB in the world
KonohasOrangeFlash 2,607
I assume that Sky Italia is the exact equivalent of Sky Sports in the UK? In which case they are very reliable. £8 million is a Brilliant and smart piece of Business.
The Skipper 20,609
As long as his wages are decent, this would be an astute short term signing.
termninja 5,290
If he is ready to accept not to be a 1st choice and we could get him for 10mil...fuckyeah! Brilliant player. Can cross some absolute beauties also. He would help a lot against teams who would park the bus against us. We would demolish them with Hazard, Mata, (Hulk), Marin agility, dribbling and flair and Maicon's crossing. And he's Brazilian. I like Brazilians and Luiz and Rami can help us

Jype 6,398
Younger, up n coming players who are linked with several clubs aren't gonna settle for 2nd choice in the team. Inter are gonna REPLACE maicon with debuchy, if he leaves, start nearly every game. Us on the other hand would only offer him a squad position. Same situation with Moses. Slows down development.Debuchy isn't really a promising youngster who requires a lot of playing time to develop but a 26 year old who's already good enough to come and challenge Ivanovic for a starting spot. A little competition for a place in the team is always healthy and there's still more than enough games for two good players to share them. Maicon on the other hand has been on the decline for a couple of years now but with the reputation he has he would still be at least as expensive as the other options and I would hazard a guess he would be on a lot higher wages too despite supposedly coming in as a backup player. And who's to say he would be happy to sit on the bench a lot either? Of course if he's really available at a cut price and is willing to take a pay cut to be second choice for the champions of Europe, then I would happily take him, but that stuff only happens in our dreams and in Football Manager, doesn't it? Zinedine Iniesco 172
Dont get too excited on maicon guys. The guy is practically 31 years old and is clearly past it. He's been utter garbage for the last two years and now inter want to see this joker out for some money, you would gain nothing from getting maicon, going after debuchy ( the only decision that makes sense) is the right choice. You have to remember to recognize the situation a possible transfer is in, its like buying an old ferrari testarossa that's got the engine shot and has been painted again after getting shot in the frame by injuries, age, and incompetence. Chelsea might be looking a new rb to be a sub but, id rather go after a good rb while the chance is there.Analyze the whole situation.

No one's stupid enough to think we're signing the prime Maicon. If you actually read the thread, most people are saying he'd be a good back up option compared to what we had last year in Bosingwa. Essentially he'd be taking over the Bosingwa role. Debuchy or Maicon, I don't think many would mind whoever. Maicon is a good alternative to Debuchy. It's not like he's already at the point in his career where he goes to a smaller league or takes a smaller role when he's not good enough to play with the big boys anymore.
