Number 452 of the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post presents the 169 clubs in the world whose volume of incoming or outgoing player transactions over the last five seasons exceeded the €100 million threshold, as well as their net spending for the last ten, the last five and the last season. In terms of the volume of money exchanged, Chelsea is clearly in the lead with €2.572 billion, followed by Manchester City (€1.726) and Paris St-Germain (€1.404).

In total, 14 teams from seven countries have 'shuffled' over a billion euros in five seasons: five from England, two from Spain, two from Germany, two from Italy, one from France, one from Portugal and one from the Netherlands. Twenty-four countries, including five outside Europe, are represented among the 169 teams whose volume of transactions exceeded €100 million, with a maximum of 30 clubs for England.

In terms of balance sheets, the values for the current season range from -€384m for Al-Hilal to +€167m for Southampton. Over the last five seasons, the figures stretch from -€782m for Chelsea to +€354m for Benfica. Finally, over the last decade, the values go from -€1.348bn for Manchester United (with only Chelsea also totalling a >€1bn deficit) to +€732m for Benfica. All the sums presented include any add-ons, regardless of their effective payment.

Chelsea, Man Utd send scouts to watch Leny Yoro

Manchester United have stepped up their interest in LOSC Lille defender Leny Yoro but face stiff competition from Chelsea, according to HITC.

Yoro is emerging as one of the brightest young talents in French football and his potential has caught the eye of clubs here in the Premier League.

HITC claims that Man Utd have identified the youngster as a potential signing and intensified their scouting of the player after sending representatives to watch him in action during Lille’s 3-0 win over Le Harve at the weekend.

However, United aren’t the only club showing a keen interest as the report says Chelsea also had scouts in the stands to watch Yoro put in another excellent display on Saturday.

Yoro has been an important first-team player for Lille this season. Despite being just 18, the Frenchman has produced mature displays in Ligue 1 consistently. There is no doubt that he has the quality to succeed in English football as well.

Although he needs to work on his physicality, he has the technical attributes to do well for Chelsea or Manchester United if he were to join one of the English giants this summer.

Chelsea, Man Utd need defensive reinforcements

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been vulnerable defensively and they will need to improve in that department. Signing a quality central defender should be a top priority for them and it is hardly a surprise that they have been monitoring Yoro.

The teenager is an elite prospect with a bright future ahead of him and he could develop into a top class Premier League defender.

Manchester United have conceded 34 goals in 25 league matches and they will need to bring in upgrades for players like Jonny Evans in the summer. They also need a long-term replacement for Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire, and Yoro would certainly be a quality fit.

As for Chelsea, they have shipped 41 goals in the league and they must tighten up at the back if they want to return to the Champions League. The Blues have spent a fortune buying some of Europe’s top young talent and Yoro could be next on the list.

However, the duo will need to be prepared to pay big money if they want to sign the French youngster as Lille are reportedly demanding around £51m for his signature this summer.

Just stay away from young players for a while.

Yeah we a team that lacks consistency in terms of performance and some actual proven quality yet folk want to keep signing young players who are just as likely to dip and need time to develop as opposed to looking for ready made quality. Its a weird one.

Can you blame them? With the amount of big money flops we've had over the years, its normal for us fans to have PTSD when ever we are linked with a big money striker.

Gimenez from Atletico? With his injuries he would fit like a glove

There is a decent market for strikers this summer compared to last.

Is there really? Its pretty much the same as it always has been the last few seasons. Particularly compared to last summer where it seemed to be clubs chasing a lot of young/unproven players who could become top strikers as opposed to actual top strikers.

Barring Kane to Bayern and Benzema to Saudi, did anyone else actually sign a top quality number 9? I don’t think so. Likes of Holjund and Ramos are players who could be good CFs but nowhere near top quality yet. And cost a shit tonne of money.

Barring Oshimen and then Toney this summer, I don’t really see any top/good options being realistically available (Mbappe - lets assume he is 100% a Madrid player).

Then we have the likes of Gimenez at Feyenoord, Gyokeres at Sporting, Ferguson at Brighton & Sesko at Leipzig - are all very much in the same mould as Hojlund and Ramos - they could be very good strikers but they aren’t yet. And will cost premium prices because there isn’t enough realistically attainable top centre forwards. My favourite 2 that has been mentioned for seasons is Latauro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic, both players who haven’t wanted to leave Inter and Juventus for seasons. Yet people still think we can sign them 😂

Think these 4 in particular have really stood out this season. Last summer you couldn't name anyone other than Osimhen or Kane it felt like.

Guirassy

Openda

Gyökeres

Gimenez

We are truly in the era where the market price for anyone that can put the ball in the back of the net to be ridiculous. Aiming closer to 150m for strikers that have a track record behind them.

Guirassy is the most established out of them you listed but I think its still unlikely he is going to be that effective at a bigger team or even a regular starter. I think if he was good enough, for his rumoured release clause £15m, some bigger teams would of made a move for him in January..

Openda is one I forgot, consistent goal record everywhere he has been apart from Belgium when he first turned pro. Leipzig will be rubbing their hands together when it comes the time to sell but I doubt it’ll be going after 1 season.

The prices being bandied about for potential top CFs is borderline ridiculous. I mean Gyokeres is valued at near £90m and he played for Coventry over a year ago. No doubt, we will be the stupid cunts who pay it and think we got a good deal out of it. Like with Mudryk, Caicedo, Fofana, Cucurella and even Fernandez.

Still the list doesn’t seem much better or different from last summer at all. There was Kane, Osimhen followed by the likes of Holjund, Goncalo Ramos, Kolo Muani. Barely any standout top top CFs. Same again this summer, barring Osimhen, maybe Toney who is the bracket below then the could be top top CFs in 2 or 3 years
