cosmicway 1,333
It's crazy money going around. Do you realize Drinkwater costed us 30 million. With 30 million I could buy the entire island I 'm in now plus the ships in the harbour. I stopped and pondered about it for a while. My frame of reference is the Greek market since I know the details. In the early sixties the record transfer was 1,100,000 drachmas equal to 13,000 sterling as the rate of exchange was back then. The player in question was Takis Loukanidis, a Franz Beckenbauer type of midfielder who made history. With 1,100,000 drachmas my dad could buy 5 houses in a decent neighbourhood. Perhaps not in a neighbourhood like Belgravia but not in an underdeveloped-slum area either - a decent neighbourhood. Nowadays 13,000 sterling is of course nothing in the football market. 5 million euros or more would be something to talk about with for Greece's football market. But for the five houses I was talking about I think 300,000 is good enough - make it 500,000 if you like. So the football money is crazy. But it's not only for Greece this kind of comparison. Three-four years ago I saw in the Daily Mail a former royal palace that was out for sale. Impressive, with gardens etc. The price ? A mere 7 million quid. I just simply don’t see it. He’s a very nice player for a small club but I’m not convinced he’s a top player. I’d be very underwhelmed if we get him rather than Cherki or Kudus. Especially if Kudus ends up at Arse or Liverpool instead. He is no where near the level of Vini Jr or Mbappe and I've not seen anyone talking like that, but I've made a couple of posts on here about why I am overall positive about the move. He is an assist machine and look at his defensive quality, which apparently no one cares about here but you just KNOW Poch does, he is also pretty rapid. I honestly think with his work ethic and his wizard left foot he would become fan favourite here. I also think he would be first choice set piece taker by quite a way, unless any of the new boys have talents I'm unaware of (possible). My only concern is his injury and whether now is the right moment. I wonder if Gallagher is on his way out if this is actually his replacement in the squad? Maybe £40m? Still will be good in the FFP books, but I was expecting him to stay at this point - he has done alright in preseason, albeit filling a hole in CM that shouldn't exist. Have no doubt he will have a good PL career, was just never clear if he is at the calibre we need if we want to win titles again.
Pizy 18,985
Gallagher is not Chelsea quality so I’d be good seeing him go for a nice hefty fee. He’s not good enough from a technical standpoint and he’s got that Ross Barkley sort of football brain where his decision making is slow. He’s someone who will always do well for traditionally midtable level sides but isn’t good enough for a massive club. mkh and Norfolkblue1961

If Sterling was still in his prime (like when he was getting 15+ PL goals a season for City), he'd be a definite pick in the English squad. Don't see Grealish competing with that. Sterling has only had 3 great seasons on his entire career, all in a row, from the age of 22/23 to 24/25yo (he was born December 8, 1994, so turns 30yo on the middle of next season) he absolutely peaked at the age of 24/25, which is bizarre, as he had no bad bad injuries it is almost like he is like 70 to 80% of NFL running backs, who peak early and then mostly tumble down due to the insane physical beating that they take (the average career span for an NFL running back is around 3 years) Sterling of course does not have that excuse he has now had 2 meh and 1 poor (last season) seasons in a row since mkh

Jype 6,398
I wouldn't mind Gallagher staying. Even if he's not starting quality I do think he'd be a good squad option to keep around. He's not on big wages, doesn't seem to have a big ego and demand a starting role, is an academy graduate to fill HG roles etc. But at the same time I won't shed any tears if he does go, as long as the money is good. For Pochettino's 4-2-3-1 there's a bit of a probelm with Gallagher's position. Even though he can play both roles to some extent, he's not that well suited to playing in the pivot nor is he quite technical enough for the number 10 role compared to what someone like Nkunku offers. As long as we use the Gallagher sale money on getting some tactically better suited players it might make sense to cash in but we shouldn't sell him just for the sake of selling if there's no clear plan to get a better alternative in.
