Fofana is injured, and KK will look better once we have some midfield cover. For as much as great defenders are great defenders, they also need a decent midfield. Not saying KK is what he was a while back, but he still can be decent.

that's where he plays... moves higher up when applying pressure, or lower to fend off pressure. The midfield is where everything happens, but it's not a place governed by (usually) 2 lowly CMs.

Also works for me. Honestly, I don't think it matters much where he plays, but his role is mostly unchanged.

We passengers in the team, Mount isn't one of them.

It means that he has a few weeks now to have those discussions with the board, Potter, Macauley, etc to see if any work could and should be done in January. As head of recruitment at Brighton it's not like he won't have been doing work in recent weeks/months on scouting and recruitment at them. The goalposts may change coming here, but he's been recruited off the back of his work at Brighton so maybe he has a couple of gems up his sleeve that he was eyeing up when at Brighton that would be just as ideal here at Chelsea.

May? It’s a huge change for him. The lists he worked with at Brighton aren’t the same he will be working with at Chelsea. Same goes with agents and scouts.

silver lining is that at least it will be a paid professional doing this work once again.

Who did we have not long ago? One of the big criticisms of Roman's era was not putting this type of team together.

Aye Emenalo and Marina signing Rahman, Pato, Falcao, Papu Djiliboli, etc was a fine operational team.  
 

Or the 1 billion spent since our last title win whilst being no where near 1st place.

Are they though? Sure most of them may not come with that 'elite club pedigree' but what they all share is they have plenty of experience at clubs that are pretty much universally considered to have a very good eye for finding great young talent.

- The guys brought from Brighton have been heavily involved with identifying and buying the likes of Trossard, Cucurella, Caicedo, Bissouma, MacAllister in the last few years alone for around £5-15M each. 

- Joe Shields has lots of experience from being the chief youth scout for Man City and brought for example Jadon Sancho to the club. He then got hired to be the head scout at Southampton and the players he got the club to buy (Bazunu, Bella-Kotchap and Lavia) have all been good in the EPL despite being just 18-20yo.

- Before Laurence Stewart took the Technical Director job at Monaco he was the head scout for RB Leipzig who are known to have a great track record with their signings. For example he was there when they signed Christopher Nkunku so chances are he might have had some input for that one.

- The other RB group guy Christopher Vivell was the head of the scouting department at RB Salzburg for five years (2015-2020) and together with Freund, who sadly didn't join this new recruitment team at Chelsea, he is said to have had a hand in unearthing and bringing in the likes of Erling Haaland, Karim Adeyemi and Benjamin Sesko to the club among others.

Just because you personally haven't heard about any them before doesn't mean they're considered nobodies in the footballing world. Either way it's a big change from the previous setup where we had Scott McLachlan heading the scouting department (with a lousy record in recent years if I might add) and then basically Marina deciding everything by herself. I'd be very surprised if this new group of recruitment personnel weren't better at identifying the right players than their predecessors.

You are right that "nobodies" may have been a bit strong, but my point was the at the very least the contacts they used to work with aren't the same they will now have to work with. They will not necessarily have relationships with the top agents and scouts... something that Marina certainly had. I think it's easy to disregard what they accomplished, I can easily criticize a good number of their signings, but there was quite a bit of silverware in the mix as well.

The players you cited (from Brighton guys) are more suited for a team like Brighton IMO... including our own Cucurella (though too early to pass judgement).

Thank you for the information... while it does not make optimistic about the future, it does provide some reassurance that it's not a bunch of quacks. it's also good to know some of them have experience with scouting youth, which is IMO the only way we can compete at this level.
