It will surely be brought up if he does well.

Wish I could find videos of his 1 on 1 defending. Speaking of which, the football community does a really poor job when it comes to analysing players on tape. As an NBA guy I'm so used to scouting videos from professional scouts that every time I wanna look up a football player to get a feel for him I find shitty highlights videos with even shittier music choices and it's all just smh The Skipper and Blue-in-me-Veins

Usually not a big fan signing player from serie A unless he is a world class player I've watched about three different videos of Alonso and also this one up there. I know that videos are not as good as watching him in the match but from what I've seen of him, he has very good attacking qualities. He can cross very well, he has better linkup play than any fullback in our team (Spanish guys are usually fantastic in this area) he can take freekicks very well. He can play in a 3 centerbacks system as the leftsided centerback. For the defensive side of his game, he is big for a fullback so he's not getting bullied easily. And he doesn't back off with hands behind his back like ivanovic when tackling, he actually closes down the opponent quickly like Azpilicueta. But because of his size, he looks slower than I thought. He doesn't have that initial acceleration, but he's still faster than ivanovic. He could be beaten by pace, especially in a faster Premier League. communicate, The Skipper and The Chels

As an example a player like our Hazard/Willian who both have great acceleration and agility will most likely rip past him. However if Alonso can position, anticipate and tackle well than he can limit this weakness. . kellzfresh

I hope they alternate, as Willian's success rate has been poor since Christmas. kellzfresh
Barbara 15,149
I could say a lot of things about Alonso, but the only true one would be admitting I've never heard of him before. Not even in his cameo on Sunderland. Hate the Black Cats with a passion, if he ever played against us, I honestly can't remember. killer1257

Like, a lot. From an Italian perspective, the price is absolutely outrageous. Pjanic went for just a bit more, for crying out loud, and he's one of the best players in the league.  Quote I've seen a lot of talk about how he could play as a centre back and it's a bit misleading. True, he's played on the left of a back three before but only due to a poverty of options. That's alright in the slower paced, tactically robust Serie A, but he'd get torn apart trying to do the same in the Premier League. Drop him into that Conte style 4-2-4 and you expose all of his weakness and play to none of his strengths.  Quote Consistency is the main thing, he puts in a real shift every week, but there's nothing truly outstanding.  Quote But he's definitely a bit of a dreamer. He's best when he has an organiser in the back four, someone to shout at him. I guess Terry would fill this role at Chelsea. But when he's left alone with a similarly absent-minded defender — Astori, for example — things can get a bit hectic  Quote Do I think he's good enough for most Premier League teams? Sure. Is he going to be one of the best in the league. I doubt it. Could he do a job as a back up? Definitely. Depressing. The Skipper
