Fernando Torres

fair points, but reckon you are all missing the other aspects of marketing: market penetration and brand recognition.

When Torres fans in country X wear Torres jersey, they are also promoting Chelsea as a club as well as its affiliates.

Similar, but not nearly as big as Park at United. As good as Park was in defense, he was never good enough to play for United IMO. Sounds familiar?

Park never cost United £50m and £185k a week though. Also Park never had the pressure of being a 'star player' at United either. Park's marketability and brand was being used to penetrate the Asian market, and it did so very successfully. Torres' marketability is useful for what exactly? He was a global superstar when he arrived here but what is he useful for now? Some deluded fanboys/girls? Some Spanish fans? Like you said, it isn't anywhere near the marketability that Park offered for United.

What I think it is - it's in Torres' contract. In his contract I think we agreed that he'll be one of the faces of the club (hence why the always mention him in interviews in big signings + how his face I plastered on all of our ad campaigns and around Stamford Bridge); so unfortunately we have to oblige the terms of the contract. I seriously can't wait for the day his contract runs out/we sell him. He's a leech.

preaching to the choir...

I was just mentioning that the club will make more out of him than "merely" shirt sales. That the calculation wouldn't be as simple as profit in shirt sales.

That he is currently completely inadequate at this level, no question.

I've suspected this for quite a while...there might be an appearance related clause as well...

I think you are defending him looking at your name... A sort of, look what he has done video i'm guessing.

Let's be honest though. The only reason he was that far up field is because he lost the ball and couldn't be bothered to get his lazy arse back.

A few important moments (Barca, Europa League) cannot hide the fact he has been fucking dire his entire Chelsea career. Anyone that attempts to argue that fact is completely deluded.

You don't need to be so bitter we all want him to leave but he did score some important goals no matter if you like it or not. Torres was instrumental for us in our Europa League win. Was not worth half of what we paid for him but he did contribute a little to our succes in europe.

I don't mean to sound bitter. Nobody has wanted Nando to come good more than me. I have willed this guy to succeed more than anyone before him. My original post was 'looking through the first few pages of this thread and we were all so happy when he first joined. If only we knew then what we know now' in response to that some guy shows a video of his goal against Barca which yes was an incredible, never to be forgotten moment. But the post seemed to be a defence of him. To say he has been a success. Even his biggest supporter has to admit he has been truly woeful in 70/80% of his time here. There is no way anybody can argue he has done anywhere near what we expected when those posts were made on the first few pages of this thread. Thats all i was trying to say.

Was just lookong at the first few pages of this thread. Oh how happy we all were the few days after he signed.... if only we knew then what we know now.

I never wanted him and could not believe when Chelsea signed him for 50 mil. how were his legs (knees?) ignored months leading up to that deal? hard to comprehend.

Albatross is a good way to characterize that HUGE mistake. but maybe if Chelsea and Roman will have learned very well from that mistake and Roman remains owner for years to come, Chelsea will, overall benefit from what was learned from this idiotic acquisition in January 2011.
