Vinokourov was awarded the rank of honorary colonel in the Kazakh army in 2000, after he finished second to his then-Telekom teammate Jan Ullrich in the men's Olympic road race in Sydney. He was again recognized by the state for his sporting prowess in 2003 after finishing third overall in the Tour and received a medal as People’s Hero First Class.[61] In late-2011 Vino was named as a candidate for parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan despite still being active as a professional cyclist.

I hate the Anglophone media:

THE men's Olympic road race has been hijacked by Alexandre Vinokourov - one of cycling's shadiest figures - as Stuart O'Grady's magnificent breakaway attempt ended in a gallant sixth and Great Britain's gold medal plan for Mark Cavendish crumbled.

Vino is no more a doper than half the Australian, American and British pro pelotons. If he is 'shady', what the fuck is Lance 'I HAVE CANCER FUCK YOU' Armstrong?

Despicable journalism, its equal to this:

The 'nobody from Kazakhstan', even without this gold medal, has achieved more in the sport than any British, Irish, or Australian rider. He has single handedly transformed cycling from a nothing sport in his country to the most popular summer sport. And before someone accuses me of talking shit, here is his CV in the sport:

1998 – Casino-Ag2r

1999 – Casino-Ag2r Prévoyance

2000 – Team Telekom

2001 – Team Telekom

2002 – Team Telekom

2003 – Team Telekom

2004 – T-Mobile Team

2005 – T-Mobile Team

2006 – Liberty Seguros-Würth

2007 – Astana

2009 – Astana

2010 – Astana

2011 – Astana

2012 – Astana

Cap, what you might not realise is that Cycling was a relatively unpopular sport in this country (in comparisons to other sports), and now is the 'flavour of the month' after Wiggins/Cavendish in the Tour De France which is why Cav was being sighted as one of our big medal hopes. Cavendish is a household name in Britain now, and it's highly likely that the average reader of the papers you've quoted has no idea who Vinokourov is. Of course, being a home games and a big favourite, the media are going to side with the Brit, it's the same in every country.

Anyone who cycles for 5+ hours at that intensity is a worthy winner.

RE: The Opening Ceremony - It was so British it hurt. And by that, I mean it was awesome (minus McCartney). The Industrial Revolution section was incredible.

The Olympic idea is to celebrate sport and crown the individual winners. It was not intended to serve national pride. It would be better

without the flags and the anthems. At least on this thread could we appreciate excellence and leave out the jingoism.

We get enough of that from the media

Did anyone watch the Egypt - Team NZ... i mean New Zealand game? Was unbelievable. Egypt had 28 shots on goal to NZ's 4, they battered the NZ goal. With like 2 mins to go, an Egyptian guy was put through, he rounded the GK, composed himself and put it over the bar and all his team mates fell to the floor. Was such an enjoyable game to watch tho, dunno how Egypt failed to win. Finished 1-1.

Gb will come good, only expected to have won a medal by now, so not exactly that far behind with none... Though we fucked up the 4x100 metres when we rested our best swimmer and didn't qualify for the final... Woulsn't have won anything anyway but still...

Handball is literally basketball with goals instead of hoops. What a fucked up sport this is. Like a goal every 20 seconds. It's very physical tho lol kinda funny to watch. Watching Sweden vs Tunisia until Brazil vs Belarus football comes on in 12 minutes.
