Manchester City are ready to pay £30m to sign Southampton defender Luke Shaw, 18. The fee would be a world record for a full-back, beating the £29.5m Barcelona paid Sevilla to sign Dani Alves in 2008.

It's a lot of money but if he does become as good as we're all hoping he could then it's not that bad. It's a gamble no doubt, but would you pay £3 million at the start of each season for Ashley Cole? I would and that's very basically what you're talking about here.

Having said that, I'm convinced the story is bullshit and I think we've got a couple of advantages. Firstly, he's a Chelsea supporter and a very vocal one at that. I'm not naive enough to think that money isn't an issue in the modern game, but this guy loves this club and we need a left-back. But I think we could also put together a comparable package for him and if that included Bertrand then that might be a better move for Southampton as well. They get a young, English left-back with the type of experience they're looking towards for their own young players.

If City are so desperate to get him for £30m then just let them have him. Don't get me wrong he's an amazing prospect and already a class PL player, but he just isn't worth 30m that's just absurd.

Well for starters, he's English and HG and think the City squad is lacking in that. And they probably want a long term replacement for Clichy and Kolarov..
