It's easy to type out your wish list of outcomes. Negotiating them into reality is a completely different situation. It baffles me how people who have never negotiated a transfer deal in their lives, who have no clue about the facts of the deal, can nevertheless post with such certainty about how much better they could do it.

Let's give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you have the qualities to hammer out a better deal than Marina and her team of lawyers. Doing so would entail being prepared to walk away if Real don't stomp up.  Would you be prepared to walk away?

Bear in mind that Real Madrid are not Chelsea. In recent seasons we've engaged in long, and ultimately unsuccessful, pursuits of a number of players. In the end all of those players were prepared to sign new deals with their existing clubs and give up the opportunity to join Chelsea. That would not have been the case if the buying club had been Real Madrid. Eden is never going to turn his back on Madrid and sign a new deal with us. As negotiator, you know the implications of that fact. Are you still prepared to walk away from the table?

If the report is accurate and Marina has negotiated £88.8m guaranteed, plus up to £41.2m in add-ons, then her bosses are more likely to give her a bonus than they are to give her the bullet.

My biggest concern is we could hahe sold him last summer for over 170m easily but have now settled for 88m upfront and 42m in add ons 🤣 which depending on what their based on might not actually fully pay out. For a club who is notoriously difficult to buy from unless their price is met ie. Diego Costa, Juan Mata, Oscar etc in the past it seems mad that we are willing to bow down to Real and let them sign our best player for 88.5m upfront with the possibility of another 41.5m which we might not get all of it. It just seems like something we wouldnt do as a club. Also considering we wont release our manager unless Juventus pay the full duration of his contract or wouldnt sell Willian for 65m because he was valued higher so why is it any different regarding selling Eden for less than the original asking price? If we didnt sell him and kept him another year how desperste do you think Madrid would be for a 29 year old free agent with huge wages and a huge sign on and agent fee?

Not sure why are people assuming the add-ons to be trophies count when it could easily be goals, assists, appearances etc (Telegraph reported the add-ons are EASILY ACHIEVABLE). And even if it's trophies, do people really think Real won't win something again soon with the way they're rebuilding their squad?

Don't forget though we only got £35m for Courtois. The leverage as a selling club just isn't there once there is only a year left on a contract.

Well we had some good years out of him. Still think he should have listened to Drogba, stayed, and become immortalised as a Chelsea icon.

We all would love him to stay but I think he's likely planned this for a couple of years now. He would know that Chelsea would never willingly sell him and putting off a contract for so long it's allowed him to be able to get a move to Real Madrid just at the right time for him before he gets too old and not as attractive an option for them. 

A lot of people have complained on the forum that if the club had built properly around him he may have stayed but i disagree. I think Madrid was always something that he wanted to do and it wouldn't have mattered how much success we had, this would have happened. If this was his childhood dream he would have finished his career thinking 'what if?' if he hadn't have made this move and that's never a good situation to find yourself in.

We provided him with a stage to become the player he has - winning trophies, winning mentality, given largely a more free role than others in the team to be the main attacking outlet and he has delivered at his end too by being our talisman. It was a great partnership and both parties will always look back on it all with fond memories.

Definitely, and you're right, in life if you don't take opportunities, there's always the residual 'What if ?'

Think he'll be devastating with that new forward they have bought - thing is with Madrid it's politically driven, subsidised by the government, and their one big priority is beating the Catalan separatists at Camp Nou. I think they prioritise that over CL or anything.

Hopefully he'll return when he realises their fans are fickle cunts , and white makes his arse look huge.
