Surprised it is such a long term contract but I think he's done very well so far and with JT set to retire/leave soon, Cahill can be a real leader for us and his partnership with Kurt is looking good. Should be a squad player at the very least for the next three years.

It sets a dangerous precedent.

What's the point of offering 30+ years old players only one-year contracts and offer a 29 years old a 4-year contract?

A 2-year deal would have been more coherent with the way of the club in my opinion.

Defenders typically have long shelf lives. Think about it like this: in two years, his contract would have run out, so either the club can renew his contract on probably higher wages or let him go for free. This gives the club a little wiggle room; especially if they ever want to sell him.

Besides, he signed a 2 year deal anyway. He had two years left + two added.
