Nah, he's not a top footballer anymore. There's a reason he lost his place to Lingard & can no longer get into the Spanish squad. He just had a fluke season like Ramsey did a couple of years ago.

Bullshit, Gil. He's not world class anymore like he was when he was here but he's several levels better than Aaron Ramsey.

Only thing that holds him back is his lack of versatility. When he isn't played in a very specific position his effectiveness drops dramatically. I 100% believe that if he goes to a club and plays strictly behind a prolific striker he'd put up silly numbers.

Not sure why this absolute nonsense keeps being spouted. Just because Mata was out best player for the first two years he was here does not mean the team was 'built around him'. Since when does being the best player in a team mean that?! If a team was truly 'built around him', someone like, oh I don't know, Nemanja Matic would've played behind him to make up for his defensive deficiencies, but we never got to see such a team...instead we got a running donkey called Oscar.

Anyway, we managed to finish 3rd with a (bad) team 'built around Mata', supposedly. I wonder how many Chelsea fans would take that now...

I can't seem to find the sentence in which I wrote, nor implied "Our team back in 2012 was built around him." I just can't.
Anyway, Mata, to be effective to his fullest, is a player that needs a team built around him, again, at his fullest.

Well then how do you know he needs a team built around him then?!?!

You're either implying our team catered to his needs or you have a crystal ball.

No real need for a crystal ball :P Same as you know that with Matic behind him he could have been much more effective. Even though they never played together.
Anyway, I never wrote that our team back in 2012 was built around him, so I've no idea what's with you and my original post, a post mostly intended to wish him good luck.

I've been trying to think where he'd play under Mourinho there and I'm struggling. Think it's impossible, actually. Unless Mata is fine now with being a reserve player which we know he isn't.

I figured José would make nice initially and play him but thinking about it more, nope. He'll obviously buy a new, top striker (Zlatan) and his captain who he's always loved as a player in Rooney will likely be his #10 which is by far Mata's best position. Martial will be his Hazard and he'll likely buy a new player for their right side. Zero chance Mou plays Mata out wide and he isn't great there anyways.

There is no spot for him once again. He's got to flee Mourinho again. Back to Spain or to a smaller PL club. Can't see him fitting a Conte side either.

Never thought Jose chose Oscar over Mata, pure and simply. He chose Oscar over Mata because Eden already enjoyed the only free role any team can afford - as per Andre interview some time back.

So, he chose Oscar to do the work Hazard just can't do - neither can Juan.

Wouldn't surprise me if Jose played Mata at United since it's a completely different team setup. The problem there is actually rooney who is being fielded in that free role. I am no fan of mata, even after OScar's worse season I just don't see Mata doing much better. And yet, I'd prob start Mata over rooney who's gotten just so fucking heavy and slow lately.

I wouldn't mind having him back, especially if we fail to bring world beaters à la Griezmann, Dybala or James. I'd rather see Baker here instead but that probably will never happen.... Only thing I'm not sure is that whether Mata fits into Conte's philosophy but something like Matic - Mata - Nainggolan could be great. On the other hand, then we would have two playmakers (Mata and Cesc) who are both useless against top teams.
