Potentially Falcao and Cavani too (the latter of which would still be useful for us to this day).

That's the thing, at that moment in time there was a huge supply of quality strikers. How true it is but the stories I've heard are that Chelsea had the opportunity to buy Godin and Aguero in the summer from Atletico and didn't want to wait so ended up buying Luiz and Torres. It was a complete cock up and is the biggest highlighter as to why I'm cautious of us trying to resolve current problems we have now this January with injuries, etc. I can easily see a situation we spend money on a Digne or Trippier and be stuck with them for the foreseeable future instead of going for a much better, long term fit in the summer.

For those asking why we even bought him in the first place, what were the alternatives at the time? Just coming off a CL win the club (rightly) figured we needed 1 last world class piece up top to complete our team. We were never going to pay the £175m or whatever it was PLUS mega wages for Haaland last summer and Tuchel/the club probably didn’t feel it was worth the risk to sign a kid like Vlahovic who was still a big risk at the time.

We wanted a striker in their prime years. Lukaku was coming off of a top season and had connections to the club already. It all made sense at the time. There wasn’t really any obvious long term alternative.

I agree this is what I think. There was no other way. But in the end we always had a a sense that this could happened with him. Oh well let's hope that if we can sell we cash on soon and don't do a torres.

I thought he would be poor and a waste of money. Didnt think be giving a exit ish interview this soon. He obviously doesn't care about the club or wouldn't have done this or least held back a bit with his love for Inter. Once you leave fine..

I am not worried about selling him. In a situation where Conte texted to Costa that he does not have plans with him anymore and when Diego said he will only go to Atletico we still sold him for big money.

Marina will get 100m for Lukaku.

Keep on dreaming. Even Inter knew how shit he was , that's why the hadn't consider renewing his contract. Look at their chairman words afterwards. He only scored 17 and 18 not penalty league goals in two seasons and alone costed them  CL knock out stage in the second season. They wanted to sell. United was desperate  to sell. Two top clubs wanted him out. But that wasn't enough warning  for this board. Only at Chelsea FC he was considered decent for title aspiring/ CL aspiring side. Only at Chelsea at this date and time people were desperate and delusional enough to pay 100 + 85 mil for him. There is just not enough stupid, unreasonably optimistic, desperate or delusional football directors  for your wish to come true.

HE is Kepa II.  No different signing than Torres. Unless Broja somehow shines.  Regardless, consenquences of this deal will hunt us for years to come. We will miss those millions, especially with the state of the squad today.

The fact that you're comparing him to Lukaku and not Drogba/Costa or even Eto'o/Ba/Sturridge says everything I need to know.

Again mis representation of the debate.

I said torres was a better signing than lukaku and youve just rinsed torres lol.

If Tuchel didn't want him, and I still believe it's the case, this club is run by clowns.

You can believe this nonsense but it makes no sense. So you think the board wanted to sign a striker that the manager didn’t want. A striker for the highest transfer fee they have ever spent and making him the highest paid player at the club. Given Rudigar and Christensen contract situation, does this make sense? A striker they have previously sold and weren’t willing to sign when the previous manager Conte wanted him above everyone else. If you also look at Chelsea transfer target they are very unwilling to sign players without resale value, they want young players before they reach their prime.

Tuchel is not here for a long time, in fact he knows that. Most likely he saw Lukaku as the best striker available, and he knew he needed a goal scorer, he had Jorginho as his leading goal scorer so he knew he needed to address it.

Covid market no one will pay that. We was fool for doing that. I think not even people can pay 60k. We are stuck with him and will go the way of torres. Leave for free and what not.

Atletico and maybe Newcastle is our best hope. I think he would do well at Atletico.

Listen, what I believe is that this club wanted to compete for the league title and it was almost thing of prestige for them. I believe the board saw Lukaku as solution for our League drought and position. They maybe saw him as the best solution for retaining top four place.

Why they didn't offer Hakimi Lukaku's 325 000 a week? Why they did't get better CM? Or DM? Tuchel wanted CB, midfielder and striker, they got him Lukaku.  NO CB. No midfielder. Is that how Tuchel was respected? I simply can not believe they neglected two Tuchel's requests and only got him third wish.

They didn't feel we needed Kante's replacement. Or proper CM?

Simply put Lukaku was board's 3 in 1 solution, get striker and everything else will sort out. No need for CB, no need for DM, no need for CM just get Lukaku and he will do what he had done in Milan year before.

That's how I see it. Tuchel is, like any manager of this club, duty completer. I really don't believe they have major role in our signings, especially record ones. Maybe just Frank had. For obvious reasons.

Maybe Tuchel was pressured to get League title and felt he would be hold responsible for failure if we failed and he had refused this God given solution. I don't know but he is here for 18 months and Lukaku is for 60 months.
