Fernando 6,585
Surprise by the news just like a lot of people here. Maybe he can do something like azpi and go from zero to hero... One can only hope. ☺ RoyalBlues

The Mak 4,459
I really wish he was able to take the chance Rafa was going to give him because I think it was pretty clear for even those very few games that he prefered him over Mikel. I hope he gets a similar chance either here or at another decent club.
Blue Gino 377
Congrats to Oriol. Hope he stays fit and has an excellent season. With Jose confirming no interest in Khedira that closes the door on that, so best of luck to him. RoyalBlues
5354 204
Really surprised with the contract extension. What plans does Jose have for him? Backup for midfield and defence?
DH1988 1,348
Perhaps it just re-writes the Barca clauses we heard rumours of so we can sell him for a decent fee?

ja1 1,166
I think the contract extension could either be that Mourinho plans on playing 4-3-3 the majority of the time next season and doesn't rate Mikel as back-up to Matic, or maybe the club still thinks that he they can make profit on him if he has a successful injury free loan. Personally I think he's too injury prone (or unlucky with injuries) to be part of the squad, but we'll see The only place to be, CHOULO19 and kellzfresh
Parky 739
I like what i have seen so far in pre season friendlies. His comfortable on the ball and can pick out a long accurate pass for runners up ahead. Need more time to judge his defensive capabilities but seem quite solid so far. RoyalBlues 4,050
Is it true he will count as home grown if he stay in England for one more year? Must be one of the factor why we extend his contract.
termninja 5,290
Gotta mention that he made some really good long passes in the last 2 games. Not bad to extend his contact, either he will prove good for us or we will sell him for a decent fee. I certainly wish him an injury free season. Who knows maybe he'll surprise us. didierforever 7,349
Has been quite impressive in the preseason. But he is always impressive when he is on the pitch, only problem is the injuries he picks up.

CHOULO19 24,332
Certainly making a solid claim to stay with the first team. I think, unless Mikel leaves, either him and MVG will leave on loan. Their performances in preseason could largely influence Jose's decision on this. Is it true he will count as home grown if he stay in England for one more year? Must be one of the factor why we extend his contract.No. He joined us when he's 19. RoyalBlues
dee25 1,044
There's definitely a strong possibility that he might be loaned out but I also wouldn't be surprised if Mourinho decided to keep him. Last season there were reports in the Spanish press that Valencia were keen to include an option to buy clause in his loan agreement but Chelsea were adamant that he was part of their future plans, and through out the season the local press were certain that even if Valencia wanted to keep him, Chelsea would refuse. Romeu even said that the club were constantly in contact with him and were closely monitoring his progress. So he might be loaned out but I think there's a likeliness he might stay.If he does stay then I think he can be more than just a back up for Matic. Actually wouldn't mind seeing him used in the same way David Luiz was used for much of last season - sitting alongside Matic. Yes it would be defensive but the good thing about a Romeu-Matic combo is that it would take the shackles off of Fabregas. It would also allow both Luis and Azpi to get forward. I like the Oscar-Fabregas-Matic midfield for home games but for away games at tough grounds like St James Park, Selhurst Park, Britannia etc that midfield would get run over. When teams line up with two defensive midfielders people just assume it's defensive tactics when that isn't always the case.During Ronaldo s spell at United Fergie often picked two DMs to supplement Cristianos free role, even against shit teams, it's not negative, it's balancing the team out so CR7s free role didn't hurt the team defensively. dee25
