How much is Joao Felix going for, wasn’t he made available?

I would love to see Felix join us. He is easily worth what we paid for Lukaku. Unfortunately for us, that Lukaku deal has probably put the club of ever paying that kind of money for a player ever again.

This transfer window is becoming very interesting. Our next moves will tell everyone what they need to know about our ambitions. Like it or not, we've lost a world class defender who will make an adversary even stronger.

If we sign Ake as a replacement, then we are indeed a mid table team and are happy with that. being abundantly clear, Ake is nowhere good enough to replace Andreas! let alone Rudiger.

If top targets aren't available, then get creative! get the less known targets with potential for growth and make a few bets.

You are right, esp if we shed out 50m for Ake we are settling for mediocrity. Might very well be that is the plan of the new owners like with Arsenal's (who have got a few signings in already tho). As long as we stay in the PL the cash will roll in.

I would have no problem with mediocrity if it is just to bleed in our academy graduates, those who are Chels through and through, have them grow and gradually take responsibility for the team. I rather get midtable finish but build a solid foundation with defenders out of cobham, maybe try broja up front, Gallagher in a 3 man midfield, than scrape a 4th place finish with dregs like Ake (which he still would not deliver).

I actually don’t think there’s much at allbetween Aké and Christensen. It’s replacing Rüdiger with someone at his level or in De Light’s case, someone who can reach that level that I’m worried about.

Aké as our #1, primary signing would be disastrous. Aké + De Ligt/Skriniar/Koulibaly/Koundé is easy for me to stomach.

I just never want to see fucking Malang Sarr playing for us again.

I see your point and also would not bear Sarr playing for us again but IMO AC is a lot better than Ake still. AC is at least an average-level PL CB. Without his nerve issues definitely above average. He has plenty of experience at the top level.
Ake is just a level below. He is the 5th choice CB at City AT BEST. Pep rather plays Fernandinho, Rodri, Walker or Zinchenko as CB than Ake, that should tell you something. Ake was not even Bournemouth's best defender when he was there.

The plan was probably to buy Ake to partner MDL as LCB. They are also both dutch so maybe that would help. But this obsession with left footed LCBs  is just ridiculous.  I remember how Louis van Gaal,  who was the first to come around with that idea, insisted on playing  his only left footed CB, Badstuber (who was just a terrible player, not as bad as Ake but still painfully slow and weak in the tackle) in the CL final 2010. He got roasted all night and Bayern lost 2-0 vs Mourinho's (albeit quality) grandpa side.

Ake has no such heroic story. How could he, only played CL 9 times. But he played an important role in relegating Bournemouth in 2020. Btw Ake is over a year older than Christensen, who has been mostly a bench option for us, yet has played significantly fewer minutes at top level. That's because Ake's place is not the bench. It's the stands.

I don't see a lot of skill in Ake tbh, but sure it's a matter of opinion.

On the other hand, I think the transfer market values Andreas quite a bit higher than Ake... despite of what we end up paying for him. 😉

I just thought Christensen’s negatives outweighed the positives. When he was fully fit and in top form he was a very solid and adequate CB. But the seemingly constant niggling injuries, the unexplained bouts of being out of the team, him getting bullied on the pitch even by players that he’s bigger than, and seeing him always grimacing in pain after innocuous looking challenges got super old.

If we had extended his contract I would’ve thought “meh, fine, I guess.” But now that he has left I’m also like “meh, fine, I guess.” I won’t really have a second thought about him once the season starts.
