For me there are two exceptions to that formula; centre forward, and goalkeeper. Keeper is non-negotiable, centre forward you could sneak by without a third if you have sufficient versatility within the squad. We tried that last season with people like Nkunku but it didn't work. Not convinced it would with current squad options either.

Two best teams on the planet last season PSG and Liverpool play without number 9 not only in unlikely potential emergency situations but all the time.

So they sneak it not only without third but without second and even first in Liverpool's case. Ok, PSG have Ramos who is more of a backup. Real Madrid is also without a proper striker.

I remember Palmer did it fairly well in 2:2 draw against Arsenal in 23/24 season. Also Neto is solid option especially if you surround him with fast and technical players like himself. Simons, Estevao, Gittens... Defenders would have huge problems to deal with all of them.

Last season we just had Jackson who is known for his disciplinary issues and Nkunku was literally his first replacement who also has very bad injury record and is not a proper striker. Guiu was there with his own issues.

But this season with Joao Pedro and Delap who both have great injury records it's dramatically less likely we would be in the need for a third option.

We dont need 3 clear strikers. Even if Jackson leaves. I hope he will leave because he is not a good finisher and his football brain is not existing.

With Pedro and Delap we should be good because. neto, palmer, nkunku can also play in that position.

I would keep nkunku if jackson leaves.

Man United closing in on Sesko according to Ornstein

Notoriously slow Man United who usually take a month to make every signing have swooped in and signed Šeško in 2 days.

Meanwhile, we’ve been negotiating with Simons for nearly 3 weeks and no bid. Will the move still happen? Probably. But would’ve been very helpful to have him in for at least one of this weekend’s preseason matches.

Ben Jacobs says that Newcastle have Leipzig’s other striker Openda on their list, btw. If the Sesko move doesn’t affect their stance with Xavi, surely they would change their mind if Newcastle throw money at them for Openda.

So again, we need to push to get this done asap.

Just need to relax on Simons, like I said before there is so much going on and knock on effects with outgoings for us, Leipzig and others. It's like moving chess pieces and it's not a simple quick thing, money coming in is needed to go out, money going out needs to come in, it's one big circle.

I'm not worried about Simons, too much is being said and he wants us, it will get done.

You’d have to assume that Liverpool know Isak is coming for them to allow Darwin to go leaving them with only Ekitike for the time being. Which in turn means that Newcastle must have something in place with a new striker since they can’t let Isak leave before that.

Wonder if we get news of a Jackson bid today.

I'm sat next to a Geordie at work now, he looks like he's about to throw his PC out of the window

When the Arabs took over they probably started thinking how many PL and European cups would be coming their way.yet here they are 1 Milk Cup and arguably the worst run rich football club in the world. No idea how to work round things like FFP etc..or desire to do what it takes to win.

Breaking from Mike McGrath.....Newcastle  considering move for Jackson

Read a report we need to sell from the players registered for Conference League last season. If Jackson goes for a cool 60m (double the amount we paid for him), I think we can do business again - Xavi and Garnacho to round out the squad
