The moment I see us linked with a player and “bargain” its just hard not to laugh. At the prices we’ve signed players at the last 3 windows we haven’t had one fucking bargain yet….

Wirtz is talented yes and I’ve seen more than enough of Leverkusen to say that but honestly he looks no better than Kai did there. Thats the truth. 

Leverkusen on a very good run with Alonso. No doubt about it. For the player, he would be better finishing the season before going to Bayern or the PL, which are the big links.

Lyon’s miserable season continues and there are already clubs lining up to raid them for some of their best players this January. I think relegation is starting to look a very serious possibility for Lyon after just three points and zero victories from the club’s first nine games of the season, despite John Textor seeming to laugh the idea off at every opportunity.

If you look at Lyon’s record, though, it’s no laughing matter - they’re doing worse at this moment in time than a lot of other previously relegated clubs have done by this stage of the season. Lyon may feel they’re too good to go down, but you just have to look at some of the clubs in Ligue 2 right now like Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne - no club is too big to go down in France, and I think Lyon are absolutely in a relegation battle.

Fabio Grosso has just come in as manager and I think it’s a questionable appointment, while we also know that several players wanted out in the summer. It’s not a happy place to be at the moment. Rayan Cherki is one name whose future could be in doubt, and there’ll be plenty of European clubs monitoring him and other players because as well as sporting issues on the pitch at the moment there are also real financial difficulties for Lyon.

A lot of players already wanted to jump ship before the start of the season, and they still could. Cherki will certainly be one to keep an eye on, though I don’t know for sure if Chelsea plan to come back in for him - the Blues had an interest in him in the past, but one problem with him is that clubs are becoming increasingly aware that he has massive attitude problems.

Cherki doesn’t always conduct himself like he should on the pitch or in training, and there is quite a problematic relationship between the player’s entourage and the club, so that could get in the way of him developing to the best of his ability. He’s considered one of the most talented players to ever come through Lyon’s academy, so there’s no doubt he could become a top, top player one day, but you just have to look at reports of how things have gone in the first few weeks under Grosso - it points to him being a difficult character and I think that’s made a few European clubs think twice about trying to make a move for him.

 

Still, while Lyon remain hamstrung financially, there are sure to be clubs who try to pounce on that opportunity. Whether or not Chelsea are one of those who decide to go back in for him, it depends how much due diligence they’ve done on the player. They’ll have to decide if it’s worth the risk, because some clubs have looked closely at Cherki before deciding to think twice.

These issues have been there for a while, not just with Grosso - there’s definitely room for him to improve the way he responds to what coaches are asking of him, and to deal better with constructive criticism. He has immense potential, but at the moment it looks like unless he changes, it’s going to be difficult for him to really tap into that potential and have the career he’s truly capable of.

Disappointment for Liverpool and Chelsea as long-term target signs new deal

Despite being just 17 years of age, Palmeiras midfielder, Luiz Guilherme, has long been coveted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Known for his pace and ability to get forward and support his attackers, including the Real Madrid bound Endrick, the player was recently named by The Guardian as being one of the best players in the world born in 2006.

It was thought that there was a strong likelihood that he would follow Endrick to Europe with both Liverpool and Chelsea amongst the teams credited with a long-term interest.

However, a recent decision by Luiz Guilherme will put any thoughts of a transfer to the Premier League or elsewhere on hold for a while now.

Daily Briefing columnist, Fabrizio Romano, announced that the player had signed a new deal with Palmeiras exclusively on his X account:

Official, confirmed. Luiz Guilherme signs new long term deal until 2026 as €55m release clause is included. Bayern, Liverpool, Chelsea and more European top clubs have been following Luiz for long time.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that any club is out of the picture, but what the new contract does do is give the Brazilian outfit some peace of mind that they will get the going rate for their player when it’s decided he should be sold.

It may mean that other targets are looked at in the meantime, and even if it’s decided that Luiz Guilherme will stay with Palmeiras until the end of his new deal, he will still only be 20 years of age but by then will have had a full three seasons of experience in the Brazilian league.

That may even make him a more attractive proposition to potential buying clubs.

A surprise announcement from Real Madrid has attracted plenty of attention, as they released an unexpected ‘Comunicado Oficial’ on Kylian Mbappe. So, what happened? In the last few days in the media in both France and Spain, we saw a lot of stories about Mbappe and Real Madrid for summer 2024. This is normal because we know the signing of Mbappe remains the big dream of Real Madrid.

However, in this public statement, Real Madrid wanted to make it clear that the reports that they’re already negotiating with Mbappe are absolutely false. This is what they did in their official statement, and they wanted to make it clear that the player belongs to PSG and they’re not negotiating with a player belonging to another club.

A lot of people are asking what’s the point of this message now. Remember that in the summer the situation between Mbappe and PSG was horrible - it was very tense as he was out of the squad for the pre-season tour before everything changed in August. Real Madrid know that making the situation negative again for PSG and Mbappe would probably be something stupid. They don’t want to create any problem between the player and the club now in the middle of the season, because people close to the deal know that nothing is going to happen now in November anyway. No changes are expected at this stage, the time for developments will be 2024, we’ll see if that’s early next year or in the summer, but certainly not now.

For Real Madrid it makes no sense to have noise again now, and also for Mbappe it makes no sense to have rumours or to make his situation complicated with PSG again after what happened in the summer. It’s also important to note that PSG will try again to extend his contract, they will keep pushing until the end to agree a new contract. Let’s see if that contract could include a release clause, there are many things to discuss, but certainly for Real Madrid to make the situation tense again with PSG after what happened in the last 2-3 years, would probably be a stupid strategy.

So that’s why they released their statement - they want the situation to remain calm, to remain quiet. Mbappe is focused on PSG, and Real Madrid know that PSG want to try until the end to get him to sign a new deal, so it would be stupid to try anything else now.

In case the Real Madrid deal doesn’t happen for sure, the Premier League could also be an opportunity for Mbappe. We know that the player revealed more than one year ago that Liverpool tried to sign him while all the media stories were about Real Madrid. Still, there is nothing happening with Real Madrid or any other clubs, it’s all quiet now and not something to be decided in November or December.

I like to cling on to this fairy tale of Kylian Mbappe realizing his childhood dream of playing for Chelsea.

Dusan Vlahovic still clear to leave Juventus - but only for the right price

Some fans have asked me about the situation around Dusan Vlahovic, as there was some talk of him leaving in the summer, although it’s been more quiet recently. My understanding is that the reason it’s quiet for now is because the situation is very much the same as last summer - Vlahovic is not considered one of the untouchable players at Juventus, but they want big money for him or they’d still be happy with him staying as happened in August. No changes so far.

It’s also worth remembering that even in the summer, despite many stories, it was never that concrete for Vlahovic to leave Juve. Chelsea didn’t see the Serbian striker as a priority target, and were only ready to pursue a deal under the right conditions - a straight swap involving Romelu Lukaku, with no money changing hands.

However, this wasn’t acceptable for Juventus, and so things never advanced from there. Let’s see if this changes in January, but for now there are no developments on this story.
