I just don’t like the idea of shoehorning a non-CB in at CB.  He’s one of the best fullbacks in the league. Why play him anywhere else? Especially if we have KK and Colwill who can play LCB.

I think he will primarily be LWB. LCB on occasion.

It's evident Tuchel wants ball carrying outside CBs so I can see why his versatility would come in use.

Actually I feel a fullback in the CB positions in a back three offers a good balance, especially vs sides that sit deep, at times you're almost playing with 2 fullbacks on the overlap. Look at how effective Azpi was going forward in that role under Conte.

Cucurella at CB. Height: 1,75 m

Vesper is gonna have a meltdown. 😂

He would make sense only if we didn't already have a 50m player at LWB. Weird, but I'm not against it... Having more quality in squad is always welcome.

He should only be playing LWB... nowhere else. Playing him at CB is just crazy when we have Colwill who is actually a proper CB. That 50m could be used towards a serious attacking option.

Yeah, pretty crazy if true. Especially if we're willing to give a CB (Colwill) away for a luxury LWB, deepening our CB crisis even further. Mind-boggling, IF true. Unless the injury seriously wrecked Chilwell, then he may actually be a replacement.

Chilwell is pretty average , and was slow already before his injury.

One thing i really dislike about Chilwell is how he keeps lobbing the ball to an area where no one is at, its like he doesn’t understand the players we have, on the other hand James/RLC often looks to combine with our front three players which is much more effective.

Or if the back 3 formation is truly here to stay then having genuine quality depth in both wing back roles becomes just as critical as the depth in the 2 or 3 roles in attack, because it becomes probably the key position in the formation.

The drop off in quality last year when James and Chilwell went down was alarming and definitely one of the bigger issues that seemed to derail our momentum mid season.

Despite the number of players at left back/wing back in the squad, Alonso is still the best choice as backup to Chilwell and we can't expect nor assume Chilwell is just going to walk straight back into the team and carry on where he left off after his injury. It'll likely take some time and he's not played a huge number of minutes in pre season. Bringing someone like Cucurella in makes a lot of sense to have two genuine quality options in that left wing back role.

And unlike Chilwell and Alonso, Cucurella does have some experience playing in a back 3 last season at Brighton to a very good standard. As @Tomo pointed out having more of a full back option as one of the three centre backs can be beneficial a lot of the time because they become the spare player from deep in an attack. If they have the quality they should have, they should be able to present an option sometimes to cross the ball in from a deeper position or send a ball over the top of a defence. Azpilicueta got a lot of assists playing in such a way, especially with Morata in the early days before he hit his struggles.

It's a similar reason as to why Reece James can also thrive in the back 3 as his delivery is exceptional and that shouldn't matter where on the pitch he is. If anything in the back 3 he'll get more time and opportunity usually to deliver compared to as a wing back. I think having that as an option to Tuchel on both sides of the back 3 adds to the variations and options he can look to utilise in games where we'll dominate the ball.
