Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea have made transfer proposal for 'untouchable' 20-year-old

RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol is currently Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel’s “number one” defensive target, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite the obvious need for new defenders following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer, Kalidou Koulibaly remains Chelsea’s only defensive signing so far.

Bear in mind that earlier this month, Tuchel admitted that he needs at least one more defender.

The Blues were in the race for Jules Kounde, who eventually joined Barcelona after “doubts” from the English club’s camp, according to Sevilla sporting director Monchi.

Romano claims that Chelsea are working on two other centre-back targets; Leicester City’s Fofana and Leipzig’s Gvardiol with the latter reportedly higher on the list.

“Gvardiol is one of the top names on [Chelsea’s] list — Thomas Tuchel is in love with this player,” the Italian transfer expert said on his YouTube channel.

“Let me say that he’s option number one in the list, but as of today, the situation on Leipzig’s side is still the same — they have no intention at all to sell Gvardiol this summer.

“So, it is going to be more than complicated.

“For Fofana, it’s difficult, but you can negotiate. For Gvardiol, it’s not even the case. He’s considered untouchable by Leipzig, so Chelsea would need a miracle to sign Gvardiol.”

Romano added that Chelsea have already tried to propose a potential swap deal for Gvardiol, offering Timo Werner’s service on loan as a part of the deal.

While Leipzig are reportedly keen on Werner, they remain reluctant to let go of Gvardiol.

“At the moment, it’s more than difficult because Leipzig don’t want to sell the player,” Romano explained.

“But Chelsea tried, and let’s see if something can happen.”

Arguably one of the best young centre-backs in Europe, it is easy to see why Tuchel is reportedly a big fan of Gvardiol.

Aside from his obvious defensive abilities, the 20-year-old is also renowned for his ball-playing skills.

As Romano pointed out, however, his being under contract at Leipzig until 2026 means that Chelsea are facing an uphill battle to convince the Bundesliga club to let go one of their key players.

Just pay the damn asking price for either Gvardiol or Fofana. Both are so young and so ridiculously talented that the price will look like a steal in 5 years time. They’re world class talents who can take our defense to the next level.

In a world where that useless refrigerator Harry Maguire went for £80m a few years ago, Gvardiol and Fofana who are just 20/21 years old and the perfect modern, ball playing CB’s for around the same price is justifiable.

If there was money available to pay £60m on Raphinha and we don’t appear to be signing an alternative, use that money on one of these future world class CB’s.

Problem I find with the German clubs is there usually isn't really an asking price if they don't want to sell. They seem to generally hold their ground pretty firm in that regard and then seem to reward the loyalty of players who stay for another season or two with a fair valuation in the transfer market when it comes to sell.

I just have a feeling out of the two, Fofana seems the more attainable deal to make with both club and player.

That shouldn't stop us laying the ground work this summer for Gvardiol though as we still have to plan for the eventuality of replacing Thiago Silva. Whether we stand a chance next summer if other clubs come in is another matter, but most of the top teams are pretty well stocked in the centre back department and with the price he's still likely to command again next year (unless there's a release clause) we might find ourselves as a front runner for him.

Loaning them Werner this season could be something that helps with those talks next year if he went back and had a successful season.

Both are on a very shortened list of the best young centre backs across Europe. To get either will be a real coup for the club in the long term.

Just do it. Give them a massive offer for Fofana before Newcastle come in with another huge offer themselves for Maddison. They ain’t gonna sell their best two players in the same week. Leicester haven’t even signed anyone yet and can use the funds we give them to do so.

Will take similar 60m+ figure for Gvardiol or Fofana and both clubs usually tend to sell if the offer is good.

I think it would take more like £75m to get Leicester to sell this late in the window and just before the season starts. Around Maguire money basically.

We’ve done lots of business with Leicester in recent years so we know they’re a selling club. Just have to make an offer they’re happy with.

An offer of €80m (£67m) should be enough to make Leipzig sell now.

Yep. Club has to factor that they didn't get this done early in the window and spend more than they intended to. Will need this signing to think about 4-3-3 in games.

Watching Gvardiol clips.. the lad is soo fucking good.

Both he and Fofana have unbelievable talent and could become amongst the very best in the world. Both excellent on the ball, both super quick. Gvardiol is the better passer, Fofana is the more physically dominant.

I’d probably prefer Fofana if I could choose one or the other because he’s significantly taller and because he’s PL ready and will need no settling in period. But I’d be over the moon with either.

Also feel it’s this window or possibly never for both. They each have great seasons and many other big clubs will be after them. We have essentially a free run at them now with Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern, and PSG already bringing in CB’s. United have as well. If we want these guys badly enough we can get them.

He does look great in the highlights doesn't he? (And, no, NOT everybody does.)

From those clips I think he would probably work at LWB also. In other words, a potentially great squad addition. (Subject to full match scouting for confirmation.)
