I remember us making serious plays and being rejected... maybe I’m misremembering tho

From what I read at the time, my understanding was always that Atletico were willing to sell us Aguero and Godin in a double deal for around £55-60m but they wouldn't sell in January, it would be in the summer.

We weren't prepared to wait so instead brought David Luiz and Torres for far more money that January.

If that is true, at least the moral of the story has perhaps taught us this time to not panic which was an option to do so in January and instead to bide our time and take advantage of opportunities.

I fully believe we will go for Oblak next year. Watch this space.

it is next year or they can fuck off

no way are we paying well over £100m for a 29 or 30yo, even a keeper, who age better

for £108m you need to get at least 7, 8 years out of him

and a 37, 38yo Oblak is not going to be as good as a 27, 28yo Oblak, it will not be close

he is the same height as Kepa was listed at for years (1.88m and he was a reverse Kepa, because he used to be listed at only 1.86m for awhile) so he cannot rely on his height as he ages

Jose Luis Caminero, on the right, is 1.87m

Atletico Madrid tie up £12.6m deal for Jan Oblak to replace outgoing Thibaut Courtois | Daily Mail Online

these are the top 20 keepers in the world in terms of value who are 34 years old or older

its not a pretty sight (even the freak Buffon's last truly good season was when he was 38/39, and he is a one in a thousand exception nowadays)

the ONLY ones I would accept as a starter for us (stop gap obviously for all but Neuer and he has only 3 or 4 good years left max) would be

Manuel Neuer
Igor Akinfeev
Fernando Muslera
Samir Handanovic
Ben Foster

that's it, only 5 (and only 2, are actually good to great) on the planet who are over 33yo

let that sink in

Willy is fucked, and his age is bending and warping our sensibilities (as he is better than Kepa atm, arffff)

Foster, if he was 34, would be worth around £5-6m on this list (far more in reality)

Samir Handanovic would be around £10m at 34yo (far more in reality)

obviously Buffon at 34yo would be worth a tonne

that's about it, Heaton is dogshit and the other 3 ARE only 34 now

Tbh i was more than happy with Luiz, he had absolutely obscene potential back then and after his first two months i honestly thought he was going to become the best CB we ever had, that performance against City was breathtaking. Even though he didn't live upto that potential (understatement) he still delivered some massive moments for us.

Torres was inexhausible, should have in my opinion took the mistake on the chin in January 2012 and got rid.

remember luiz almost scoring an overhead kick in his first start v fulham after an all-around amazing all-action full debut and thought the same thing, that he would become the best CB in the world [emoji1787]

but yeah he did play amazing for us at times and his role in 2012 CL will never be forgotten... shame how it ended and how he signed for that disgusting club

Like mendy is an average keeper.

But kepa was expected to concede like 35 goals last year based on xg and conceded like 46 so an average keeper is a massive upgrade.

Then what you've gotta add into that is that from open play we allowed the 3rd fewest shots with our biggest weakness being set pieces. A big keeper to claim those would help to address a big issue of ours. Our defence was bad last year for sure but no where near as bad as our goals conceded would make it seem.

The statistics have Kepa bottom of the league and the improvement in terms of performance, results with a dependable keeper could be very big this season. The game against Palace for instance, we were coasting 2-0 up when Zaha's long range effort (Palace's first real shot) flew in. Completely changed the flow of the game.

Conceding a goal especially in a tight game in this league pretty much takes away the chance to win There were only two comeback wins last year - vs Arsenal and vs Villa. I can see a lot of results turning in our favour with a 6 or 7/10 keeper.

we’re not selling kante as credible reports have claimed over and over that we want to keep him and that he wants to stay

Credible reports like...?

A lot of the noise are coming from Italy (surprise surprise) and from what I've seen in the English media, there has been next to nothing about us willing to sell Kante from Matt Law, The Athletic, Guardian etc. Only Goal seemed to suggest that a sale could be possible IF Inter offer a large amount of money - https://www.goal.com/en/news/kante-hopes-to-remain-at-chelsea-despite-inters-growing-transfer-/1w1w5rubke2741ha39rj82hudm - but they also mentioned that Lampard has not indicated anything about selling Kante.

And then there is also this from France...

Any links to share?

Pretty sure Football London only report what other papers are saying rather than having their own inside sources.

Haven't seen any of the reliable Chelsea sources say that Lampard, the club etc want Kante off. Not even Romano himself has reported anything on this.

rumors of kante going were from shitty italian sources to begin with, and I believe the only club rumored was inter, recently their sporting director said they’re not going for him at all:

“Ausilio also added that another midfielder linked with Inter, Chelsea's N'Golo Kante, would not be arriving at San Siro.

“We’ve never started anything to sign Kante from Chelsea. No chance. He’s not a target," Ausilio said. “

This is the problem with the rune reading exercise we call the transfer window. That's exactly what Chelsea would say if they were determined to keep him, and exactly what they'd say if they were determined to maximise his price from a sale.

The slowdown for Bakayoko (due to excessive request from Chelsea on the redemption), leads Milan to look at different alternatives (Soumare and Florentino).

those MOTHERFUCKERS were going to take that OPTION to buy and FUCK us next summer, refuse to redeem and try and pay £10m max

I hate Italian club ownership and boards more than any others in football

criminal scammers, gameplayers, and mafia wannabes

all are connected to Italy misery

Tiemoué Bakayoko  ( the selling, not the buying)
Emerson
Davide Zappacosta
Jorginho
Victor Moses  ( the selling, not the buying)

Alonso ( the selling, not the buying)

plus we got screwed to a point on Mario Pašalić and then stupidly did not exercise Boga's cheap buy-back

According to L'équipe, the offer is 18M euros + 2 in bonuses. Rennes did not anticipate his sale this summer but the player doesn't want to miss the chance to join a big club.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.football.london/chelsea-fc/transfer-news/chelsea-transfer-rumours-ngolo-kante-18884749.amp

Ian mcgarry is their source here. There have been a decent amount of rumors floating about for us to off handedly say that there is nothing here at all.

Also, romano is a solid reporter, but also pretty much a tap in merchant. You won't have him reporting Mendy to Chelsea a month ago itself when transfer rumors were floating about Cech liking and recommending Mendy. I say this with all due respect to romano, he reports transfers a week or so before, but no way is he a source or no way can he be sited as an example to know what the club and the board want
