Sarri But Not Sarri Thread

Kante is  box to box midfielder. He was at Leicester, he was under Conte and he is now???

Or am I getting this wrong?

Why am I seeing pundits saying he is being misused and should be in the DMF role!? He can't play there in this system. If you put him where Jorginho is then it would actually be a waste of his stamina and ability to get from box to box.

Never mind that, people who say Kante needs to play as the defensive midfielder in the 4-3-3 clearly do not have a clue of his previous success. He is one of the best, if not the best, defensive midfielder around but Kante worked best previously when he was playing alongside someone in midfield - Drinkwater at Leicester and then Matic here. He is not suited or discipline enough to play as the sole defensive player in front of the back four. Conte tried Kante there but he was an absolute disaster.

We need to give Jorginho some time. It is his first season and he is wrecked. We really could have done with Paredes.

It's futile trying to convince people otherwise. People want to bin Jorginho simply because he's seen as Sarri's love child.

None of the pundits ever seem to remember this.  We'd be asking him to do less running and more passing.  He's a good passer, underrated by many IMO.  But, he's battery powered, his motor is unrivalled.

Yeah, Kante is fantastic..but he does not have the tactical nous of a Makelele or Essien to play the CDM role all by his lonesome.

I think Kante and Jorginho should play in double pivot. More defensive stability, less pressure on Jorginho, Kante can still roam forward like he did under Conte etc. Kante alone didnt work great for us or France.

But then Sarri says Jorginho doesnt fit that formation. Well for someone so praised to be smart, quick minded, tactical blah blah Jorginho is realy limited then.

That said, our current formation is absolute piss in midfield and attack, so why Sarri didnt try changing it to 4231 for couple of games is as weird as his rotation. Conte changed it too afterall and it worked. Except for ball movement (which doesnt lead to anything) our midfield 3 are realy bad in creating or finishing.

Sarri thinks we will just gel perfectly into the current system somehow and improve by playing same over and over. What will realy happen is bad results, players getting angry/unmotivated and Sarri getting sack quicker than you can say Sarriball.

The squad may be average but on the other hand you gotta ask, is Sarri getting his message across properly to the players? You would think that after 6-7 months at the helm, we would at least, at the very least, see some glimpses of the so called Sarriball but we haven't seen it. We have been seeing the same dull, turgid, clueless football week in week out. Nothing has really changed and Sarri is the one responsible of forming the team, making the players play the way he wants. You can blame the players for not being good enough but Sarri should be held accountable as well because he chooses the players, he selects the team and let's not forget, he's been making things worse by playing Hazard out of position and not getting anything out of it.

I understand what you say but I want to explain once again - My point is that we know very well who Sarri is, made Napoli play beautiful football for three years in a row and improved his players massively. Chelsea did not hire someone like, let's say, Gattuso, just because of his name and the fact he would have come from Milan.

We got one of the best managers out there that had his full backs play high up the pitch and the three up front play quick one twos and make A LOT of runs in behind.

Why aren't Chelsea's full backs and wingers the same? My guess is they are too limited and simply cannot play this type of football. The fact that Sarri does not bench the big names I think we all know the answer and frankly it keeps this club from moving forward. And the board keeps this locker room power active, too, by keeping players for too long and giving contracts to average ones.

And then there is the complacency. What I've noticed with the current generation of players at Chelsea and it happened before, is that once someone gets a lead at the top, for example Liverpool now, or City, they down tools. It's like they say to themselves 'Ok this is over in November we cannot win the title we'll just finish the season and go on holiday'. They are mentally weak, Sarri is totally right, as soon as Liverpool and City went 6-7 point ahead they stopped playing as if it was 3 rounds to go and not 30.

You look at the way Chelsea have played against Spurs at Wembley and Arsenal the other day. Chelsea had all the ball and frankly I've never seen this team go to the Emirates and simply hide the ball from Arsenal. Kepa could have read a book in the 2nd half. But something was missing in the final third and I blame the players for this, no movement, no runs in behind, nothing to put just a bit of pressure on that Arsenal defence. And still with no threat from Arsenal, Azpilicueta never overlapped and stayed in his comfort zone.

For me it is clear - 60-70% of this squad is not good enough to play this kind of football but nothing is going to change because this board always has the last word on everything and not the manager.

Makélélé, Lampard, Drogba, Franco Baresi, Chopper Harris, and Alessandro Nesta my 6 favourite players in football history.

Sarri could have escape heavy criticism till this day. But start the same squad after THIS*, and play like shit - everyone will hate you in no time. Rightly so.

* Arsenal defeat

I think many are losing their patience based off the shit board not backing him.

We have, overall, turgid players.

exceptions

Kepa

Rudiger (a good 2nd CB, but not truly WC)

Luiz ( a specialist at long ball but zero chance a rock you can win titles and CL's off of)

Kante (criminally misused)

Hazard

all the rest (yes, Jorginho fanboys, I am tossing him into the meh pit, along with 2019 version of Azpi)

are simply not up quality needed or are shit indeed

CHO (leaving anyway probably) and Ampadu are too young to judge

if Higs shits out, we are well and truly fucked, and it will get worse if/when Hazard leaves

I trust the board ZERO to sort it

I know what you're trying to say but we have won a Premier League and Champions League with David Luiz. He has his moments where you cringe but he's also just about the best ball playing centre back around and I do think during his second spell at the club his positives far far outweigh his negatives.

Luiz is far from my worst concern, I hope to hell he renews, we just need a truly WC defensive CB as well.

I am sorry if I came off as too harsh on David. I respect him loads, he has stepped up like a man and stopped the silly mental mistakes.

I do understand what you were saying because he does play in a risky way at times but I do think Luiz in Conte's first season and this season (besides the Spurs game) has shown a consistency to his game where he can now be trusted to be solid and dependable, on top of being an outstanding technical footballer.

I totally trust him atm as our starting CB

Sarri complained that we are taking too many touches of the ball instead of one/two touches then pass. He complained there is no motivation/determination from the players, which means we don't run enough.

And from my personal observation of the game the players refused to press high enough and there was no compactness from the team. The distance between the lines of defence, midfield and attack were too far apart, spaces were everywhere to exploit. This must be very frustrating for Sarri, almost like the team betray his tactics anytime we face small difficulty for 10mins in a match. That is why he said we don't know how to suffer or be dogged.

We may have to wait a long time for Sarri to let out the duds and get his own players like Pep did with (Navas, Toure, Hart, Sagna, Clichy, Zabaleta, Fernando, Mangala, Bony, etc) and Klopp did with (Lallana, Sturridge, Moreno, Clyne, Toure, Mignolet, etc) Attacking football managers take longer to implement and need support from the board and fans while defensive like Conte and Mourinho can do it in one season. Patience is needed guys.

There was at least 1 passage in the first half where we played a little triangle and Pedro made a great run down the right, but the ball didn't go forwards, Kovacic dawdled on the ball, then turned around and laid it off 5 yards backwards.  It's a strange cycle.  No on makes runs, so no one looks to make the pass to runner, then guys don't make runs because the ball isn't coming, etc., etc.
