Antonio Rudiger

£300k pw for 5 years is £78m which is insane. However, what will it cost to replace him? £50m? Then what do you have to give the guy that you replace him with? Probably a minimum £100k a week which is £26m for five years. So, in total it washes itself out.

Obviously, the problem is that you set the bar so high for wages. Personally, I think this sort of thing is going to become more common in that players will wind down their contract and ask for the money the clubs would have to fork out for them.

As for this particular situation, I think we'll just have to let him go. AC is the more important player to tie down and Rudi will be unsellable/a sunk cost once he gets his contract owing to his age. Additionally, as great as he has been there is an argument that he is thriving because of the system (same could be applied to AC as well tbf) and we may be better off with a left footed CB for the LCB position.

Will be a shame if we lose him but it is what it is.

Matt Law is convinced he’s going. There has been virtually zero progress according to him. Rudiger wants 300Kpw

His personal opinion and personally, wouldn't 100% trust Matt Law with Rudiger stories.

He was the one who circulated news about Rudiger getting Lampard the sack and getting into conflict with the younger players (which CHO and Tammy dismissed)

Chalobah signing a 5 year deal and us being linked/prepared to bid for that Hungarian LCB is giving the club more leverage. I think Law may be right here.

Law stated January is a big time for both the player and the club. Rudiger will be able to speak to other clubs and will get a better understanding, because at the moment he and his agent believe they can get 300Kpw elsewhere.

Don't believe for a second that him and his agent haven't already been sounding out interest from other clubs and listened to their offers. January only means he can officially sign a pre-contract to join in the summer but it's naive to think negotiations haven't already taken place even if they're not allowed to do it officially yet.

At the moment I don't think there's much hope of Rüdiger staying unless Marina & co improve their offer to match what Toni wants. If the club does offer him a big contract, I can't see why he wouldn't sign it. Under Tuchel he's playing the best football of his whole career and is playing in a team challenging for all trophies out there, and he might not be able to keep up the same level of performance at another club under new management so as far as the actual football is concerned it doesn't make much sense for him to move now, but I definitely understand the reasoning that he wants a huge pay day because his next contract will be the most important one of his career and I won't blame if he wants to make the most of it.

But I'm not worried in the slightest. It was Tuchel who made Rüdiger perform at a world class level he never reached before so I don't see why he couldn't do that with whoever the club get to replace Toni as well.

But what would it mean for this season though?

Would you keep a player who's on his way ou5 and feeling undervalued by the club, in the starting 11? I wouldn't.

How would that affect the dressing room?

Not too concerned in the long term, but this could really deflate a potentially exciting season for us.

Are we not getting that Hungarian lad in December?

Is he any good? What if he ends up being a another Malang Saar?

Either way it sucks if our solution for this season is to shoehorn a new player, make him adjust to Tuchels system., while keeping an uncontent player in the squad.

Would be shame for a season to derail just because of that.

We're already losing Mendy in January, FFS.

I'm not concerned. I'm very much sure Rüdiger still wants to win trophies this season and make his last season at the club one to remember so why wouldn't he continue to give 100% even if he knows he's leaving? Plenty of teams have players who by January know they're leaving come next summer but only the really unprofessional ones stop playing to their best.

I mean, his contract situation has been more or less the same since last summer but that hasn't stopped him from playing at a very high level so far this season and I don't see why that would change. Starting to play poorly right after his contract is settled would only make things awkward for him once he actually does join his next club, wherever that may be.

Well, it's the same situation now. But not in Jan if he begins official talks with other clubs. By then he will know for sure whether the club really wants to keep him.

Hope his love for trophies goes a long way. The reason we've kept so many clean sheets recently is because our defenders and goal keeper keep going the extra mile., not just because of Tuchels back 5 formation.

You saw what happened when Rudiger fell asleep against Burnley. Just worried that could become a more regular occurrence if he doesn't renew.

we need to buy Maxence Lacroix as well

HE is the Rudiger replacement for me

sell Malang Sarr, we got him on a free, so even £10m is profit

we lose Thiago soon (hopefully he stays for at least half the season (until the winter WC)

thus Attila

re-sign AC and we all good to go

Rudiger turns 30 next season, we are insane to sign him to a 5 year contract at £300K+ PW

All good,..but these are more like solutions for next season and after.

What about this one?

EDIT: Never mind. It's just speculation anyway. Let's see what happens in the coming months.

Just miffed at the possibility of us ruining a good season because we couldn't tie down 1 or 2 first 11 defenders.

Not literally, but could be as good as gone, no?

It's not like he has this emotional connection with the club like Hazard did., which allowed Eden to continue performing at the highest level even though he knew he was leaving.

Doubt you'll see Rudiger be 100% committed like he has been in the early part of the season, and that could be a big loss, IMO.

I think he will be fine, he is a pro and a crazy competitor
