Lack of English players in the squad

Shaw cost more than 30M£, a left back that did nothing in football cost more than Fabregas, Costa, Matic,, Filipe Luis, almost any player in our team (in reality he would have been maybe the most expensive player in the squad) . We can't buy a left back for that price, and for sure not one that did nothing in his carrer.

4 seasons ago Real Madrid paid 25M€ for Coentrão the best LB in the world cup of 2010, and every one thought it was too much... image almost 40M€...

Ryan Bertrand is having ten times the season that Shaw is having. There are tens of LBs in the world that are better than Luke Shaw.

Yeah Ryan would be a better English LB then Shaw.

But our problem is that we didn't give him much chances and thus used Azpi.

While Azpi is good, but when even Mourinho prefers Azpi over then Ryan then you know how tough it is for English players.

So not also the club problem but managers as well. Here clearly Mourinho preferred a foreign over an English player.

And it's the right move at the moment since Azpi is much better then Ryan.

Can't have it both ways @Term-X,

Kind of hard to get English players into the team when they all suck.

I think England teams will be going through a stage now with a lot of foreign players, because most of the golden age of English has gone (Owen, Beckham, Shearer, Hargreaves) or they are past their prime like Cole, Cole, Lamps, Rio ect.. so there is bound to be less English players in the bigger teams if the big teams want to compete with others in Europe. The thing is though, a lot of English clubs are now following other countries values and are putting effort into youth and young players, now we have youngsters coming through and being played reguarly like Chambers, Wilshere, Barkley, Studger and Sterling ect. So I doubt this will be a problem in the future, although I find it hard to see any of our English players or youngsters breaking into the future of this team at the moment.

Don't mean to be rude but i find myself chuckling that some of you believe we will promote youth players, just because Mou said so. Lets be honest Mou has never been a specalist in bringing up youth players and integrating them into the first team.

England clubs in general have a problem in developing English players. The increase revenues and popularity of PL have come at a cost, the development of young players have been neglacted. With so much money at each club disposel, the easier path is buying foreign players rather then developing one. When you look at the lack of talent in the England NT it is quite obvious how poor this league is in developing young players.

He's never been a specialist due to him having an average of 3 years at any club. Managerial stability = Youth integration.

It's the second season. We should have at least seen some promise.

If by next season we see nothing, then we will never will no matter who is at the club.

That's the reality if this day and age of PL dominance.

As @Joker10, said that big money in the PL is also making it hard for even lower clubs to develop youth. Because they can now afford to buy ready made foreign players from another league and what not.

There is huge pressure on Jose from the club and the impatient modern day football fans (they know who they are) for Jose to deliver some silverware, so obviously there is going to be a lack of appearances from youth even though there have been a few who already made appearances this season.

He said that when everyone raved over Arsenal that year.If didn't feel under pressure he would play more youth and if points were dropped and won sod all least have future players sorta thing.Do reckon maybe use a couple a game but if he feels experience wins can't blame him

Thing is, there is zero reason why Bertrand should not be here right now.

We didn't need to splash cash on bringing the "Best LB on earth" to ride the bench behind our 25 year old starting LB.

No reason on our part, but you're not considering what Ryan wants. He wants regular football and he wants to be at a place where he can show what he can do. You forget that last season a lot of people were saying he wasn't good enough to even be a backup.

Why not? Because you think so? Because if Ivanovic or Azpi is injured I have no doubt about which LB I would like to see in a game against Bayern, or Man City, Man United... or other team. Luis because he is a lot better.

You prefer to see Bertrand in the bench, but the rest of the world prefer to win titles.

He is good in Southampton. He Chelsea he was another that when he played did nothing. Being good at Southampton doens't mean that he is good enough for CHelsea.

But that's the thing.

People like Terminator X want English players at all cost.

No matter if they are shitty.

You can't have it both ways.

Mourinho is a manager that is hired to win, and in winning he picked out the best prospect in between Azpi and Ryan regardless of the nationality.

That's why it will continue to be like that even if Mourinho stays here for a decade.

Jesus, I named Sterling & Shaw (call me when Bertrand has a better season than Shaw's previous, too early yet). You're acting like I've just listed average players ffs.

It's been mentioned before but hopefully the club are keeping an eye on Stones' progress.

Is it so easy for a player who is really worth it to stay in the limelight just because the first selection is somebody else ?

Suppose we have a youngster who is as good as Diego Costa.

I don't believe he will not make a great career just because of that.

Only with goalkeepers that tends to happen.
