‘He played against Basle, not like Ba or Mikel coming in to rescue the game, but he came on when the team were winning 1-0 and had specific tasks.

‘The reasons why he’s not playing so much are things I can speak about with him but not with you.’

Jose is not idiot, he knows exactly what he's saying and doing. He feels Mata needs some motivation and he is giving him it. If he had any doubt that Mata cannot deal with this kind of public criticism, I am 100% sure that he would not have said it. But rather, he knows the kind of guy Mata is, and he knows how he will deal with this criticism.

I can only assume that the reason why Mata is still wearing a blue shirt (well, technically - the poor bastard can't get a game) is that no top club abroad wanted him or could afford him. Expect PSG to take him in 6/12 months time.

Mourinho is such an ass sometimes. In the interview he said Mata has been below par and that justifies him leaving him out. As a manager get behind him and give him his confidence back. Same way you play Hazard every single game even when he is poor, try and give Mata game time to get his spark back.

  1. 2 theories on outcasting Mata - (a) Mourinho is flexing his muscles & telling squad no one untouchable b )Major falling-out behind scenes.

  2. @wayneveysey how can you fall out with Mata though? He wouldn't hurt a fly.

Mourinho on Mata: 'He will be playing from the beginning against Swindon. I hope he tells me I have been wrong on the pitch'.

Mourinho on Mata: 'He's a top kid, and a very good professional, so I am waiting for a professional reaction'.

Rob Harris @RobHarris 20m

Mourinho on Mata: "If he proves that I am wrong I will be the 'Happy One'."

Get this lad on a fitness programme for a week or two and have him back in the side when he's 100%. As much as I wanna see him playing every minute, he looked below par so far this season.

He's one of the world's best players and will nail his spot in the front three when he is proper fit.
