Most teams have won just four of 13 games

By Alistair Tweedale Football writer

wolves celebrate a goal

Just 13 games into the season, the Premier League table is already taking shape - at its extremes, at least.

Liverpool, Leicester, Manchester City and Chelsea are steaming ahead in the Champions League positions, while at the other end, Watford, Southampton and Norwich are clinging on for dear life. In between, however, it is a different story.

Outside that hugely impressive top four and a largely disappointing bottom three, this season's table is tighter than ever before in the Premier League era. Just six points separate the 13 teams between fifth and 17th, making this the most bunched the table has ever been at this stage of a season. The smallest the gap had ever previously been on November 29 is eight points (back in 2003/04), while just last season it was bigger than ever before - a whopping 18 points.

Those who claim the Premier League is the best league in the world suggest "anyone can beat anyone" and "there are no easy games". Among the middle 13 clubs, anyone can certainly beat anyone this season. Another way of looking at it, however, might be to say that the majority of the Premier League's teams are far too unpredictable and inconsistent.

Table of stats

All but two of those 13 teams have won exactly four of their 13 league matches this season. The table is so tight that a positive result or two can drastically alter the complexion of a team's season.

Just last week, Tottenham were 14th and in freefall. A change of manager and a win at West Ham later, they are in the top half and just two points off the top five.

Similarly, as recently as two matches ago, the conversation around Wolves largely centred on the domestic struggles that have accompanied their foray into the Europa League. Yet after successive 2-1 wins over two other teams in this middle bunch - Aston Villa and Bournemouth - Wolves are now flying high in fifth, threatening the 'big six' status quo and Nuno Espirito Santo is being linked with the Arsenal job.

Chris Wilder's Sheffield United are one point off fifth, but also four points above 16th. Burnley have shot up from 14th to seventh after stringing two wins together. West Ham are one place above the relegation zone but still just two wins behind Wolves.

So if you're down about how the season is going, give it a week or two: your team is only a couple of good results away from turning the campaign around.

Dear Mr Kroenke Gooner Head Honcho.

Please as your new manager employ FSW. This would be a right , and well needed laugh that we all need.

Cheers

TBH, I want to see that. The PL needs Mourinho and Benitez at war again!

Even better after Arsenal lose their fifth in a row, hearing the catch phrase in the post match interview -'this is football' from the fat fucker

Best way to measure level of Manager is to see did and how much he overachieved with his teams. Benitez did it so many times. Valencia, Liverpool, Newcastle... That's something Guardiola never did. He always did expected or failed. For me Benitez is one of the best managers out there... He would make Arsenal much more solid.

We play Spuds and Arsenal in December, both games away and have new coaches.

What seemed like easy games now will turn to harder games, especially if Arsenal find a better replacement by then...

We also play Arsenal again in January.. Urghhh.

Former Arsenal captain CLEARED to take over at The Emirates as current club won’t stand in his way

https://www.caughtoffside.com/2019/11/30/former-arsenal-captain-cleared-to-take-over-at-the-emirates-as-current-club-wont-stand-in-his-way/

The only real surprise about Unai Emery’s sacking was the fact that he almost made it to December.

Freddie Ljungberg has been given the gig for now, but it’s not completely clear how long he will get. There’s a good feeling around the club now that Emery has left, so it’s crucial that the board keep everyone on side and make a popular appointment.

Realistically that probably means we will see someone heavily connected with the club get the job, unless they can find a truly elite name who would be interested in taking over. Max Allegri has been touted, but there’s nothing to suggest he’s willing to accept it.

Another name who keeps popping up and could make sense is Mikel Arteta. He’s a former Arsenal captain who was well liked by the fans and he’s also very highly rated as a coach. If any fans are hoping that Arteta is the man to take over then this could come as some good news.

The Sun has reported that although Pep Guardiola desperately wants to keep his assistant at Man City, he won’t stand in his way if he does want to leave and become a manager in his own right.

We’ve seen in the past that great assistant managers don’t always make it when they step up for the main job. There’s no guarantee that Arteta will become the next Guardiola, but he’s certainly had a fantastic education when it comes to coaching and management.

Urghh come on city

at some point we have to start being against Shitty every game, as they, Leicester and us are battling for 2nd

although Fabinho going down for the dippers for a month is HUGE, he might miss 10 or 11 games

he has been (arguably, if not him then van Dijk) the best player in the EPL so far

and Victimpool has an INSANE amount of games coming up, so they will miss him badly

2 games basically on the same day due to time difference (the games are 22 hours apart, one in Asia with the FWCC, the first one is at Aston Villa) so they have to split their squad

13 games in 39 days (one EPL game is postponed though as they would have had to play 3 games in 4 days with half the squad having 2 travel days (to Asia and back on top of that), lolol)
