Palmeiras 1-2 Chelsea

Andrey Santos looked solid for someone who had to be unexpectedly thrown in last minute. Kept his passing simple and tidy, stayed calm in possession, and got stuck in to some crunching tackles here and there to win the ball back. Made a couple of positional mistakes that allowed Palmeiras to break past him but that’s perhaps why Maresca doesn’t view him as a holding midfielder but more of an advanced #8.

Valuable experience for him overall and it’s good for him to show the manager that he can be trusted like this.

Noticed that too. He definitely has an attacking intent - slightly reminded me of another No 8 we once had.  Also bound to be a bit rusty atm

Missed the game, watched the highlights. Not surprised Pedro looked good. I thought there was never a question that he is a very good player, the only question mark really is whether he will be a goal scorer because his non penalty goals has been pretty weak (excl some concerns I have around training ground incidents / match day incidents with him). But he's a versatile, talented guy who can do a bit of everything pretty damn well. Personally I think he's here to fight for Enzo's spot but also potentially play CF depending on opposition.

Does feel like a luxury signing when we still haven't sorted out the fundamentals (CB/GK) but pretty excited for next season, we will have a proper bench again and Enzo will have tactical options galore which is where he thrives imo.

Bit concerned about Estevao - not got a good record bringing in and integrating players at his stage historically - where they look like they have a huge, insane potential but will need to do a big adaptation and still grow physically and tactically etc. Suspect we'll flounder with him for a year with him playing bit part role and then loan him, then he may get disgruntled and demand a transfer before we get to see the player he can become. We'll see.

What a great win and what was as pleasing was how good Joao Pedro looked, and he will now probably start the semi with Delap suspended

You would think that but you just know there is a possibility with Maresca that he starts Jackson.

When Palmer was signed, don't think anyone expected him to score 20 goals in a season, rival fans were laughing at us spending 40 million on a City reserve attacker.

Not saying the Brazilian kid is going to turn into Palmer but he's got natural skill on the ball that you just can't teach.  The hard part for him will be adapting to the physicality of the Premier League and those dirty fouls (similar to how Hazard had to adapt to the defenders kicking the sh*t out of him).

Yes but his situation and Palmer's are not really comparable - both in terms of our level of desperation at the time and in terms of the players experience - Palmer already had his bedding in season with City, where they slowly let him adapt to PL and gave him 14 apps over a season he enjoyed so little he demanded to leave in the summer. My point is we're at that point with Estevao and that is a hard place to be, its a lot easier a year or two after they've bedded into PL. We are pretty good at dealing with the players that have had that period but historically pretty shit at ones who have not, although jury is still out if modern Chelsea will do it better or not - depending on what happens in the end with Andrey Santos.

It is unlikely he will be patient with us but also unlikely he will actually be ready to slot right in. Most big talents we've had in that situation we've totally bottled it.

Hopefully we don't assess him all summer and then decide to do a random poorly thought out PL loan for him like we did with Andrey.

If I were you, I would wait a bit.. We have plenty of players to offload, squad numbers might change. Like Pedro Neto last year, played one PL game and he swapped to 7 afterwards.

I thought Santos was okay. Nothing spectacular.

Pedro was great when he came on. I like the mix of him and Delap and potentially both on together. Think there could be some good synergy between them.

I actually thought Nkunku played okay but let’s see if his time is coming to an end.

Agree about Santos but didn't see anything particularly good from Nkunku either. That said, there is about a quarter of the match that I haven't watched yet. I slept through my alarm for kick-off but woke up around 3am. I then tried to watch the game 'as live' but fast forwarded too far at half time (DAZN don't make it easy) and caught a glimpse of the score. After I knew they had equalised I didn't see any point of going back. Reading the forum it seems I missed most of Pedro's bright spell.
