BTW people complaining about his age....wasn't Drogba just 34, and people saying he still got two years left in him?

Should not really discard a player with great experience out like that very fast. Especially when he will be rotated, and will get more time to rest.

Exactly! but people will just say Drogba was 'one of a kind' and all that rubbish!

Well he is not one of a kind, cause when he played regularly the last 2 years he was pretty bad.

It was when he was being rotated he was more fresh and thus had more in his cannon to take it to the next lvl in certain games.

Expect the same with Maicon if he is kept fresh via rotation.

Not true, Milan let him go because Alegri wanted a 'playerbreaker' rather than a 'playmaker' in front of the defense that is why he moved Ambrosini there and Pirlo to LCM. Then Pirlo got injured and then Van Bommel came in to sit in front of the back four and Seedorf came into to the LCM and was outstanding so there was no where for Pirlo to play, then he gets injured again so Milan felt the best thing to do was to let him go.

Well yes, he left because of Allegry preferred a different type of player to play in the DM position, but that is a tactical choice, it does not mean that they thought he wasn't good enough. They even offered him a contract extension which he refused.

which he probably refused because he knew he wasn't going to be a starter.

There seems to be a lot of petty insulting in this topic...

Person 1: "Your naive."

Person 2: "Well you naive and ignorant."

Person 1: "You have no common sense."

Person 2: *Insulting Internet meme*

Et al.

The way I see things with Maicon is that a couple of years ago he was arguably the best all round right back in the world and certainly the best attacking right back. Those attacking instincts won't have disappeared. Yes, he wasn't great last season but he was by no means poor. He can still get up and down the pitch - he's 30 not fucking 40 (and remember is younger than Ashley Cole)! And his ability in the final third could potentially give us an extra dimension to our attack, especially against the smaller teams who will defend deeper.

Ivanovic is the better defender, but if you look at the other right backs available - Debuchy, etc are all more in the Ivanovic mould then they are Maicon. Maicon is still the best attacking right back currently available on the market. He will provide something different to Ivanovic and that is important for us next season, having different options.

The report somebody posted a couple of pages ago made for interesting reading, and provided evidence that when given sufficient rest, Ashley Cole and Maicon are still two of the very best full backs in world football. We as fans have been clamouring for Cole to be rested for games for ages, and since Robbie has done so Cole's performances have been generally excellent again. Being managed in the same way Maicon can have a similar impact.

This transfer will give us 7 defenders in our first team squad (Cole, Bertrand, Maicon, Ivanovic, Terry, David Luiz, Cahill) who I would feel confident seeing any combination of lining up. I haven't felt that way about our defence for a long time.

We signed a Chelsea legend when he was 30.

A player that set the premiership alight and gave the team so much.

Always tried his best and an all round great guy.

Under most peoples logic here Chelsea should not have signed Gianfranco Zola.

We also signed a key player in the Mourinho era at the age of 30.

A player considered by many the greatest defensive midfielder in Premier League history.

So good he even had a position named after him.

Under most people's logic on here we shouldn't have signed Claude Makelele.

The whole point is that for every Deco there is a Makelele.

For every Shevchenko there is a Zola.

Age should not be the one deciding factor on buying a player and Maicon is still one of the best right backs around, particularly offensively. The transfer fee being bandied around on the internet seems very reasonable too.

I don't think anyone here is saying Maicon is shit or anything and I'm sure he would do one hell of a job for us but only for a couple years and then he'd just leave with no re-sale value.

At first I was quite against this myself but I'm slowly warming up to the idea of having him at Chelsea. For the prices quoted (£6m and £80k wages) we could do a lot worse, but I also believe it could be invested more wisely too. If he comes, I'm okay with that but if we decide to go after another target I wouldn't complain either.

To all you who are sceptic:

To bring in someone like Maicon is smart because we still have a world class RB who is still 100%. If we buy a young talent his development might be hindered due to not enough playtime. Realize that noone can take Ivanovic's place at the moment and we wouldnt be able to throw in a young guy in a game when he's been on the bench too much.

A guy like Maicon would with his experience and greatness have no problems with stepping in. Going for a young talent (wether its one from our own acadamy or not) is a better move when Iva's time is coming to an end so that a new RB can be given enough playtime.
