The Next Manager?

The problem with Simeone is not the fact that he too is a coach that puts emphasis upon the defence and the hard work. The problem is that just as Mourinho he is the negative and aggressive kind of coach. That's not what we need. From the board to the fans, and most specifically the players, Chelsea needs positivity—Chelsea needs to enjoy football again, and not to grind results against the World.

So who would you pick out of interest?

I'm not overly excited about Simeone, though I do think that's who we'll go for.

Togetherness, spirit, counter-attacking, it sounds very familiar. I don't see it as progress for the club.

I don't think he's bad, it just doesn't excite me.

I like Simeone, but that's mostly because I think he fits the ethos that Jose set down. He's combative, he wears his heart on his sleeve, he fights for his players and defends them and on the pitch he isn't an adherent to beautiful football for it's own sake. He isn't afraid to be pragmatic, but he's had to be as an underdog in La Liga. He's also had good success there.

But this whole discussion for me is pointless unless we put the new coach in a position to succeed. That means having people throughout the club who are all working towards a common goal for what we want to put on the pitch, and that needs to feed down into every level of the academy.

If we don't do that then we'll just keep spinning our wheels.

Yeah. "We'll see" is all we have right now. Part of the reason he doesn't excite me is precisely that he seems like a continuation of Jose (in which case, why did we get rid of him?). It seems like more of the same. Which means same old board and same old decisions/recruitment.

Simeone's vinegar seems to do the trick.

Maybe, but I'm not sure his is the same vinegar as Mourinho's...

I think Mou kinda lost the plot, I haven't (and not been paying close attention) seen Simeone throw his players under the bus, nor sub one on and off in the space of a few minutes.

So it's probably not a comparison of apples to apples, more like apples to oranges :)

Oh no I agree - Simeone is not identical to Mourinho. I actually like the comparison someone said of Guardiola to Wenger. Its not a perfect way to France the Mourinho/Simeone comparison but it's a start.

Simeone is a winner. He parks the bus when he needs to, he presses like a cocaine addict when he needs to. He was won a league with an underdog team against two giants, each having one of the game's greatest players. If the board sees that it needs to spend money consistently, he'll be in a more conductive environment for success.

I think he fits who Chelsea are. I don't want to become Bayern and dominate possession and play what people want us to play like. I like a tough, rugged team that gets the job done. Counter attacking and tight defending is what i want because those players who fit that style are tough and have balls.

I have misgivings about Hiddink, but if he proves to be a success in his short term, I see no reason why at the end if the season the team should go for another manager. Hiddink was only a caretaker in 2009 because he was also Russia NT manager. In 2011 he was available, but the club made a weird move and took AVB.

Simeone is a good manager, but questions must be asked about his ability to emulate ouside La Liga his succes with Atletico Madrid.

I dont see how so many think Simeone would be the best option. The way he sees football is very similar to Mourinho. I think we need a more flair manager right now.

Thats the reason why most people want Simeone.

Btw, next season will be tough, because its going to be a season to find stability again. I don't believe its the best time to get Simeone. As I said before, if Hiddink short term is a success, I see no reason why he should not stay beyond 2016.

Here here!

Forget the artistry and elegance, I want thunder and lightning and the bridge. Never been happier than watching a high octane thriller.

Probably because his Atletico sides are similar to Chelsea 04-07, strong defensively, brutally ruthless and hearts of lions.

Plus I read Simeone thinks this squad needs an huge shift in playing staff, that alone makes him very tempting.

Also unless these flair managers have some substance (like Pep) I don't want us going anywhere near them, we might get some fancy scores against relegation fodder but when I see Pellegrino, Wenger, Brendan attempt to take moral victories after losing to tactically superior managers it makes me cringe, if any manager does that with the Chelsea badge on their chest I think I'll lose the will too live.
