I disagree? Oblak or Ter Stegen has proven themselves over the years and while the fee may be huge for a keeper, at least we would know what we get from them.

I do not believe, and never have, that premium keepers are difference makers for struggling sides. Eden raised our level; I don't think any keeper would, or could, have done that.

Premium keepers are cherry on the cake players. When you've put together your cake then perhaps go to town on a keeper but, when you are in a building phase focus the cash where you need it most. A good side with a bad keeper will always outperform a bad side with a good one. In fact the bad or ordinary keeper is invariably overrated when he's playing for a good side. My objection to Kepa was simply that I would not have spent that money on a keeper, no matter who he was. Going with Marcin, then upping the offer for Koulibaly instead could have seen us become a much better side over the past two seasons than we have been.

It is very different positions.

Chillwell could be a shite left back and we'd be able to sell him for 20-30 mil quite easily based on what could be and what he was for leciester.

Look at morata. People look at him as being a bust but we recouped the investment same as many others.

World record fee for a kid on a hype train who didn't have the attributes of a top gk was always incredibly risky.

But it's done now and it's the situation we're in. He's somehow still getting picked for Spain so someone rates him so maybe someone will buy him down the road

It realy depends how shit they are, realy. We cant offload Drinks and we will never recoup half of what he cost. Probably Bakayoko too.

Kepa failed spectacularly and given the price, it will indeed be impossible to get much back.

But like I said, thats down to the club picking such target. Pretty much same Bayern did with Sanchez. Extremely overpay for a decent player.

That said if you pay extremely for someone and he turns out as expected, who cares?

And that was my point. We choose wrong player, not the amount of money. I mean sure I was sceptical about spending that much money on Kepa. I personaly wouldnt pay. But Im no scout. I wouldnt pay that for Chilwell either. Its common sense to see how much risk there is. Meanwhile Alisson? Yes, I would. So the GK position isnt the problem. Problem is WHO you pick to spend that cash on.

On another note, Atletico spending 120m on Felix was another example of idiotic decisions, which I stated back then.

The club wanted to buy Alisson but that went out of the window once he joined Liverpool. Kepa was recommended by Sarri.

Buying players that fit just one manager is terrible too. Which is what I said plenty times. What if manager leaves? Then you have a bunch of players not fitting anymore (Jorgi?)

What if Lamps is fired or whatever? I hope Chilwell was bought as a part of Chelsea project and not Lampard project.

Spending 70m on Kepa was a mistake by the club. If we ended up with Alisson, it wouldnt be. Even if he was a GK. He was way more proven and looked class, backed up with stats and club results.

Are we really doing this again?

What if the technical director/director of football buys Player A and the manager doesn't want him? We got De Bruyne all those years ago under Emenalo and Mourinho decided he was done with him after like 5 games. The key thing is the manager and board need to work together to identify targets for the best of the club rather than one figure trying to impose themselves over the other. That is how Klopp and Guardiola have been able to operate and get the players they want at Liverpool and Man City respectively. They didn't just have the players thrown onto them to manage.

Unless we go hire a manager who primarily plays with a back 3 in the future, am not worried about whether the likes of Chilwell will fit in. He's not a system player like Jorginho. It's funny how you only mentioned Chilwell when Lampard was also the one who asked and got Ziyech, Werner and likely soon Havertz. Not worried about them being system players then? :chai:

Agree that it is always risky to have it under one manager.

However this time around what I like is the profile of players which are getting ... most of the players which we getting are capable of playing mulitple roles/positions and are young which means that even if the current manager is fired the next one coming in can still use the players.

So amazing how Marina milked them. 28 yo final year of contract and still one of the most expensive deals in football history. Real needed to give their fans a galactico big time and we exploited that ruthlessly

Reading first couple of pages on this thread makes me realize how amazing our transfer window has been. The board did more than anyone expected. The only problem is what Kepa become in the last 12 months but we will address that too.

Certainly puts the angst over our rivals signing the likes of Bergwijn, Gedson, Ighalo and even Bruno into perspective

It's not news at this point but from a football perspective, we have really benefited greatly from the pandemic because we have been able to sign 2 players that we otherwise would not have been able to in normal circumstances - Werner and Havertz.
