Lifted this off another forum, but can't help but feel it's applicable here.Their cavalier approach to tearing down and rebuilding the squad (and the club for that matter), is what has led us here. Maybe given more time, it will pay off, but who knows what that means for success on the pitch.

My suspicion is that they are trying to run Chelsea the same way they ran the Dodgers. In the first couple of years under Boehly, the Dodgers invested wildly and unsustainably into their team, were hit with financial penalties, paid them, and won the World Series. Move fast and break things.
In baseball, a much more individualistic sport than football, high levels of squad churn doesn't really matter if you're fielding better pitchers and better hitters than you had last year. Team chemistry and tactics are much less important than the raw ability of the players. In football, not so much.

Change was definitely needed, it's just a shame that we had to wait until the opening week of the season to sign the midfielders that we wanted so badly.

Like what happened to getting your business done early and allowing the new players a chance to settle down and integrate with the rest of the first XI?    Caicedo looks like he's going through pre-season now and who knows how long it'll take Lavia, Badiashile, Broja to find their feet in the first team again.

21st of Oct to the 7th of Dec schedule...

Arsenal, Brentford, Spurs, City, Newcastle, Brighton and Man United...

Poch better figure it out lol...

Let's see how long Poch sticks with the 3 at the back combination.  I see some heavy score lines coming up if he doesn't figure it out as Arsenal, Brentford, City, Brighton and United have the tools to score 3+ goals against us and Spurs under Ange look like they're on fire at the moment with so much energy.

I don’t know how many more times I can say this but it is NOT 3 at the back, it is 4 at the back with Chilwell playing as a winger. A number of people including Poch and Silva have said this but also, just using your eyes during the game makes it obvious. Colwill has been playing as a leftback.

Still playing with extra defenders , it’s embarrassing . Pick a proper lineup or get another job

Yes I agree the personnel selection is poor, but I don't think the problem is the formation / system or that he's changed it. He's just been putting loads of square pegs in round holes which he didn't do in preseason, except for maybe Maatsen who he kept playing anywhere except for LB and Gallagher as a CM but we always thought that was because he didn't have options.

And that's the biggest problem with the lineup.

When has Colwill played "LB" during his young career?    He's a ball playing CB, not a LB.

No point in having 3 CB's on the pitch as well as a LB playing as a winger against the bottom sides.

I would say the system is broken if you're having to rely on Gallagher to play deeper.   Hopefully once Lavia is fit, Gallagher takes up the sub role.

The more you look at it the more obvious it becomes..

This club is a fucking mess.

The transfer strategy is comical.

All that money spent and look at our team.

We are facing years of mediocrity now thanks to Bohely and the clowns with him.

We should have spent all that money on 5/6 World class players liek Kavaratskhelia, Osimhen, Gvardiol ect and supplemented them with academy players. The guys we have purchased font seem better than the academy players we already had. Bizarre.

the board is destroying the club.

how is it possible to spend so much and then see the players who came on for the game with nottm?

they're betting too much on young players. it's like a real football manager's save.

Personally think we would have walked away from Caicedo when it became obvious it was only going to be for silly money if we had been in a position of strength already with Ugarte in. Could be wrong but honestly would be REALLY surprised.

they are 2 very different type of players

Ugarte is much more similar to Lavia than he is to Caicedo IMHO

just wanted to park this here (it is about the 25 and under cut-off age by the board for buys)

bottom line

the only actually available WC 26yo and up players who it cocked us on were:

3 who were 28 to 30 (Oblak, 30, Skriniar, 28, and possibly Maignan, 28)

no 27 yos were affected (as none on my extensive list were actually available)

and then six 26yos, with the 2 AMFs  the most controversial (In terms of us passing on them simply for being months too old) for most here I would think

(most of these were crazy hard pulls btw)

Frenkie de Jong   Central Midfield  26    (too similar to Enzo IMHO)

Nicolò Barella  Central Midfield 26 (we got Caicedo instead)

Lucas Paquetá   Attacking Midfield 26

James Maddison   Attacking Midfield 26

Ousmane Dembélé  Right Winger 26   (I know many here don't rate him)

Lautaro Martínez    Centre-Forward 26  (I know many here don't rate him, even more than posters who do not rate Dembele)

the linked long reply eliminates all the rest btw (for various reasons, mostly because they WERE all under 26, and thus not blocked, or were pipe dreams, not available)

Yes but Enzo/Ugarte would have been a very good double pivot, I don’t think there’s any chance we spend 115m on an extra midfielder if that’s our starting point, it would be a completely nonsensical transfer if we were not in a state of total desperation.

I think once he settles, Caicedo will become WC, it just will take a bit, as he hardly had a preseason and it's chaos with us atm

Yeah throw money at our problems. Lets just keep doing that.

Although I 100% agree its time to stop throwing money at problems... we do need to shell out for a proper striker at some point. It could change the whole feel of the club and boost every department on field and off field if we start converting our chances and win games.

So if we draw the line today us and United are far away from top4. My opinion.

This was back in June.  It was clear. And if United didn't have refs help they would be even more down.

5 teams that are currently top5 will finish there. Three teams from London are best watch for me. They play best football. City will win title but is boring and Liverpool will finish top5 but are not good defensively.

Now when you think about it we are not even top5 clubs in London forget the league lol
