Cesar Azpilicueta looks set to remain at Chelsea this summer following the sanctions imposed on owner Roman Abramovich and will not get his dream move to Barcelona, according to reports.

The 32-year-old, who has been at Stamford Bridge for a decade, was expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season and has held talks with Barca over a return to Spain on a free transfer.

That move seemed to now be a formality after news of Abramovich’s sanctions broke, with Chelsea now unable to offer new contracts while their owner’s assets are frozen.

But, according to Spanish newspaper AS, there has been a twist in the contract saga with Azpilicueta having already triggered a one-year extension that ties him to the club.

The defender had a clause in his contract which meant that, if he played 30 matches for the club this season, they would have the option to extend his deal until 2023.

Club captain Azpilicueta crossed that benchmark in February and AS claim Chelsea have already taken up their option.

But Azpilicueta had remained in talks with Barcelona and was confident of convincing Chelsea to let him leave for a nominal fee – or even on a free – as a good will gesture following his long service to the club.

That will no longer be allowed to happen, however, with the sanctions imposed on Abramovich meaning the club are unable to conduct any transfer business – incomings or outgoings.

Moreover, with Chelsea unable to strengthen their squad for the foreseeable future, they will have no desire to let Azpilicueta leave and weaken their options even further.

Barca intend to remain in contact with the versatile defender, but will only be able to sign Azpilicueta if the sanctions on Abramovich are lifted.

The Catalan giants are also chasing fellow Chelsea contract rebel Andreas Christensen, a deal which now looks extremely likely to happen with the Blues unable to offer new deals, while Antonio Rudiger is also set to leave the club.

Before this my train of thought was it was the right time to let him leave but after this I feel we need every bit of continuity we can get.

Agreed. Until we see how everything pans out it's important to both keep continuity and retain experience where we can because the only transfer business we may be able to do in the summer is bringing back loan players.

For any new owner coming in though, resigning Rudiger to a new contract has to be priority number one.

This. Stability is key.

There's bound to be instability off the pitch, good or bad.

We absolutely need stability on the pitch at least for the near term.

Issue number 372 of the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post presents the net spending on international transfers concluded since July 2017 by clubs of the 40 most active nations from an incoming and outcoming fee volume perspective. England (- €4.35 billion) and Portugal (+€1.15 billion) recorded the most negative and, respectively, positive trade balances.

Italy has the second most negative trade balance on international transfers concluded since the start of the 2017/18 season (-€910 million), followed by China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Spain. At the opposite end of the table, Brazil (+€1.02 billion) is just behind Portugal and outranks the Netherlands, France, Argentina and Belgium.

The data includes eventual add-ons irrespective of their effective payment, as well as sell-on percentages. However, this information, such as that on transfer fees themselves, is not always available. The figures presented are thus to be considered approximations that are as accurate as possible. FIFA’s annual reports with official aggregated data are available for free here.

No one is shock. We knew he is that. Is best to let him go back to Italy. But we will take a big cut. Maybe if we are lucky we get half.

If they get him, Casemiro and Tcho would give so much protection that they would be able to play 424 with Vini, Haaland (if they get him), Benzema and Mbappe up front.

Plus they have Camavinga, Modric still top class, Valverde, Kroos...
