I think we have enough games, comps, and rotational opportunities to make it work, plus what are the odds they both stay healthy for the next 200 games?

Try explaining their agents that there is a 50-50 chance their client will be mostly playing low profile games. However if we throw money at them, then sure. If we did get both though I'd be over the moon. I think our best bet is to keep Emerson as backup and competition to whoever new LB will be, he is good enough for that.

Alonso is a goner though, thank fuck. :P Good to see Lamps isn't doing an Ivanovic with him.

If we can somehow get the price down to about £60m I'm starting to come round to the idea of Zaha. With Tammy's emergence another striker that can double up as a winger is handy, no striker worth their salt will come in just to play back up.

We should try and use our connections with Palace to our advantage, we've done them solids with Ruben and Michy which has helped keep them in the PL especially in the formers case, something like offering them first refusal on the players we make available for loan in the next couple of years or even Michy as a makeweight could go a long way.

Same here. Price tag aside, I am coming around the idea of zaha. And possibly dembele (Lyon) in the summer. We would have Tammy, dembele, zaha, pulisic, Cho, willian/new rw for 3 positions.

Anyhow, if we were languishing in 6/7th with no hope of top 4, I would have said fuck it, all things to be done in summer when everything is possible. But given our current position and lamps' total and complete lack of trust in giroud and michy, we need someone right now. And zaha fits the bill well (in terms of back up striker and winger option).

Maybe Giroud can be the make weight since he intends to leave and that will give us Tammy Zaha and Bats in attack. Handy

Wonder if they're only the board's targets OR Lampard's & the board's targets as well...

IF we grab them both I am sure Lamps has signed off on it

hell, maybe he turns Zaha into a goal machine

I am not going to go insta-bitch if we do buy him

I will give him some time to prove me wrong

and Ake is a given and I so approve, I just do not want only him as CB upgrade

in the summer I beg of the board to sell both AC (sell him in January if Ake comes in) and Zouma and buy Romagnoli

I would rather have Telles or Grimaldo at LB and keep Emerson as backup as long as we buy Romagnoli than to only buy Ake and Chilwell and no Romagnoli

Zouma is a menace (not in a good way) playing the ball out and he is back to his old poor positional tricks

everyone gets infatuated with his brute strength and size, but we are not an American NFL football team where he is our strong safety, and he just is too lacking in too many key metrics

he means well, and is a great bloke, but as long as he is here and playing a lot, we are all going to having these conversation for the next 5 years

believe me, I SO wish it were otherwise

I have always liked him, (I used to do a dance when Mou brought him on with 10, 20 minutes to go to play roving destroyer, and it meant we are closing up shop on the way to another clean sheet (ahhh, the good old days, sigh) this is not an Alonso or Drinkwater situation

Signing more shite in Zaha, this club never fucking learns. The writing is on the wall with this dud, no magical wand will suddenly make him look good.

Zaha... Seriously? Think people are just excited about making signings. Honestly for the life of me can't see the point. Guy is 27, had a go at utd that never worked out, looks fair in a small side. Not for me ta

Not saying he will turn into this level but VVD was at small teams until he was near 27.

I get headaches every time I have to read Zaha's name ...
Better leave things as they are.

If season or two ago we sold Willian and bought Zaha I would be happy. But circumstances changed dramatically.  Number one: Zaha is horrible this season. Number two: Sancho is there for the taking.

I can't see scenario where we end up with both so signing Zaha means we won't be able to sign Sancho. So I don't understand why would anyone in our club make this so obviously wrong decision?

Lampard hints at attacker signing after claim of potential £100m bid for Sancho

https://www.chelsea-news.co/2019/12/lampard-drops-sancho-transfer-hint/

According to the Metro, Frank Lampard revealed in his post-match interview that he’s considering the idea of strengthening Chelsea’s attack in January now that the Blues’ transfer ban has been lifted.

Lampard has worked wonders with some of Chelsea’s most talented youngsters and the Blues are currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table.

Nevertheless, the Blues legend insisted that Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid this summer has led to the team ‘losing a lot of goals and creation’ up top.

The Metro add that Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho is one of the star attacker’s that is being strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge,.

The report also claims that the west London outfit are considering a £100m bid for the ace.

Chelsea certainly have the budget to make a marquee move with the Guardian reporting that Lampard will have £150m at his disposal in January.

Sancho should definitely be priority #1 of course but Lamps clearly wants reinforcements in January. Sancho looks increasingly impossible next month. That's the calculated risk the club have to really think about. Do you wait until the summer, hope that what we have now is enough to make top 4, and risk missing out on him anyways? Or do you go in and get someone (Zaha) with less fuss now?

I'm just trying to imagine a scenario in which Dortmund would agree to sell in January and the only way I can think of is if someone offers a ludicrous fee like 120m or something. They're within touching distance of the top of the Bundesliga table and are through to the last 16 of the CL. Why sell your best attacking player now?

I'm not saying it can't be done, just that he had yet to really produce. Even in the Scottish pub League vvd looked a player. Just don't think zaha looks great outside of pace. Seen someone saying we are on full push for zaha at 80 million and would only go for Sancho if he was at a reasonable price....80 mill for zaha, surely only 40 mill more for Sancho. Much younger, much better, much more sense imo

Its easy to say in hindsight but I don't think anyone really foresaw VVD becoming mere world class level let alone the level he did. I remember the thread with him on here there were rumours we were prepared to sacrifice Christensen to get him and everyone was outraged at the mere thought of it, how times change

Re Jadon i think we are going to try for both which kind of lines up with Lampard saying he wants to replace Eden's productivity, plus Zaha can double up as a striker something we need now as with Tammy's emergence no one will come to be back up.

Van Dijk could have made the move from Celtic to a top 4 or 6 team just for the money Celtic wanted (13m IIRC) nobody would take the risk.

It was clear to see watching Celtic games that he was far too good, could argue he was never out of 2nd or 3rd gear most of the time but the fact he was in Scotland went against him. Arsene Wenger wanted him but didnt want to pay what Celtic wanted, which Southampton eventually ended up paying after Ronald Koeman made it very clear he rated him and Celtic were knocked out of the CL qualifiers. He improved under Koeman too and became much more vocal/more of a leader imo too so thats maybe helped him accelerate to one of the worlds best in his position too along with his ability.

Strangely enough Ajax never tried to buy him when he was in Holland which looking back, seems like madness, going by their scouting departments ability to find gems.

Never thought he'd ever be at the level he is now where he is being nominated and coming in the top 5 for Ballon D'ors and for 75m I did think it was a bit much for us to try buy him but he is an outstanding player. Probably the best CB in the PL along with Laporte (who is another outstanding CB imo, arguably playing better than VVD when he arrived from Spain and before his injury).

If you look purely at Zaha's goals and assists stats you may not be impressed. Remember that Palace have been utterly terrible for much of his time there and he has had to be the sole player they had to make things happen. We were all frustrated when we were at times so reliant on Hazard. Now imagine how annoyed Zaha must be having to shoulder the load with much worse players around him.

Nearly as important as stats for me are things like creating space for others, putting extreme pressure on defenses with pace and skill, and the much talked about drawing of fouls in dangerous areas. I just saw a couple of days ago that Zaha has been fouled something like 500 times in the PL. He's right up there with Hazard every season with fouls drawn.

Seeing him and Pulisic both in aggressive attack mode would be frightening to any side in the world.
