This pandemic is really like a never ending nightmare. Just when you think things are getting better, a new, potentially more dangerous variant appears...

I'll defer to my favourite expert on the subject (a thread if you click on it).

Furthermore if it was really more dangerous we would be seeing India April esque signs from South Africa by now.

Even Devi Sridhar (who's basically like the Mana of Covid discussion) doesn't think there's an awful lot to be concerned about.

We have to be cautious but the sensational headlines the last couple of days have been awfully irresponsible.

Trust me, Tomo. I haven't been reading just the headlines. Obviously I am curious just as anyone else about how dangerous this new variant is but at the same time, given the state we have been living for almost 2 years now because of the pandemic, forgive me if I'm feeling fearful/paranoid about this new variant. Nobody fucking wants to see those tough restrictions imposed again!

I get the paranoia (I've been travelling on and off since May so I've had being caught out with Covid abroad hanging over me) but even if some variant turns up that totally evades immunity (which is obscenely unlikely) the vaccines can be modified accordingly within weeks.

All the signs so far suggest it doesn't even make people ill, fingers crossed it stays that way.

Don't jinx it, Tomo. Don't. Jinx. It.

Cant be far off a new variant/mutant strain that spreads and kills a lot quicker, its just  just the way species adapt.

This variant is meant to be more transmissible, so we have to hope the above doesn't come to fruition.

Johnson and other governments by not taking up the option of rolling out the vaccine to other countries such as Africa, South America have ensured profits for Astra Zenica, Pfizer to be around 2-300 billion pounds. Only 10% of Africans have been vaccinated for instance.

This stagnation allows the viruses to mutate, which is why we are where we are now -masks compulsory again, and possible lockdowns. The potential cost to World economy forecast by World Bank runs into trillions of pounds.

Short term profit for big pharma and their shareholders, but massive damage to the global economy and inconvenience for us.

Don’t viruses mutate to bypass vaccines ?

Not sure theyre that clever - point is not inoculating half the World for shareholder profit, lets it develop, run riot unchallenged, mutate and get stronger. If it had nowhere to go it would eventually be eradicated.

Feel sorry for you mate -wheres your missus then ?

Viruses tend to mutate to over time be less deadly, the common cold was lethal once up on a time. It makes no "business sense" for them to keep killing host en masse because that means it can't keep spreading as much and as effectively.

It would literally be the most unprecendented event in human history if a mutation effectively sends us back into March 2020. Is it technically possible? I guess anything is, but as far as plausible possibilities go I'd say Exeter City getting three promotions on the spin and winning the PL at the first time of asking looks a decent bet by comparison.

Belenenses' Portuguese top-flight match against Benfica was abandoned early in the second half because the home side had only six players on the pitch - having been forced to start the game with nine men, including a goalkeeper as an outfield player.

A Covid outbreak had left Belenenses with 17 players unavailable and their nine men were already 7-0 down at half-time.

Yes. Vaccinating into pandemic was literally the first chapter of 'not to dos' in biology.

Ill try help clear some stuff up

So far this new panic can be summed up as follows:

  • 32 mutations in the structure has taken it to a bigger leap towards a path into mutation however it seems to be currently evolving parts of its structure to do with infection etc but the actual virus seems mild.
  • SA hospital reporting its infecting a lot of men under 40 and then theyve shown a vaccine breakdown however when you consider SA is 75% unvaccinated these stats are messy.
  • Powers that be will probably now force a 4th jab when completed in say 4-5 months.
  • Big pharma got the champers out partying.
  • Found all over the world from many who havent been anywhere near south africa, Points to it spreading via vaccinated travellers/Poor prevention and I would speculate it could be more interesting than that alone, Possibly this is a result of the vaccine's forcing yet more evolution of the virus as it trys to evade/battle anti bodies, Of which theres a range (from infection and vaccine) but im speculating wildly with that.
  • People being led to beleive that the booster will provide protection against a more refined varient, Not known if it will.
