High levels of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccination rates could “challenge the virus” to mutate into variants against which the jab is less effective, a government advisor has warned. It comes amid fears it “would be dangerous” to return to life as normal on 19 July.

Dr Mike Tildesley is a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (Spi-M) government advisory panel. He told Times Radio that “there is a risk” with the planned 19 July reopening. The government is expected to lift the vast majority of remaining coronavirus restrictions on this date.

‘Frankly, that would be dangerous’

Meanwhile, cases continue to rise. And Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chairwoman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, said deaths were beginning to rise again too.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme:

We’ve only just heard in this bulletin about the rising numbers of cases, the rising numbers of people requiring hospital treatment, in intensive care and sadly deaths are starting to rise again, too.

There seems to be a misapprehension that life will return to normal from then (19 July), and that we can throw away all the precautions, and frankly, that would be dangerous.

The rate of new coronavirus cases in most areas of England is now back at levels last seen during the winter.

Patient numbers have risen to levels last seen around April.

And there has been an increase in the average number reported each day of people in England who died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.

Risks

Tilldesley urged people to ensure they get their second dose of vaccine due to the “much higher” levels of protection it provides against the Delta variant.

He said the risk “should decrease as we go through August and we get more people vaccinated”.

But he added:

But still, there is a risk with July 19 in terms of exposing more people to infection as a result of further reopening.

He warned:

Of course the more cases you have, particularly with high levels of vaccine protection, that does then kind of challenge the virus a little bit more and gives more potential for it to mutate into a form where the vaccines are less effective.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges said in a statement:

There is little doubt that things will get worse before they get better.

‘Removing the batteries from the smoke alarm’

Prof Stokes-Lampard told Today she had been “profoundly concerned” over restrictions lifting.

Warning of the pressures already faced by medical staff, she added:

It feels in hospitals and GP surgeries as like the middle of winter in terms of how busy we are, rather than July, which would normally see a very low number of infections.

No 10 suggested on 9 July that NHS staff could be made exempt from self-isolation if they come into contact with an infected person. This is in order to help workforce levels.

Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s shadow health secretary, said:

The NHS is in crisis as Covid admissions climb, cancer treatments delayed, waiting times increase and pressures intensify.

Sajid Javid has no plan to support NHS staff through the summer. Their only response is to talk about removing the batteries from the smoke alarm by watering down the NHS app and looking at ID cards for pubs.

I would advise to get either of the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna)

the Johnson & Johnson vaccine (aka Janssen) has less efficacy against multiple variants (although it is decent against Delta) and is now showing further possible side effects (although very rare) as well

it is FAR better than nothing, so IF it is the only one you can get, then go for it

Tennessee Republicans' war against childhood vaccinations reached a new level on Tuesday after Tennessean reported that the state's health department "will halt all adolescent vaccine outreach – not just for coronavirus, but all diseases – amid pressure from Republican state lawmakers."

The halt to child vaccine programs comes just one day after Tennessee's top vaccine official was fired for what she claimed were her efforts to promote COVID-19 vaccinations for teenagers.

That firing came weeks after Republican Tennessee State Rep. Scott Cepicky held a public hearing in which he attacked the department for making fliers encouraging "impressionable" teens to get vaccinated.

The latest move, as reported by Tennessean, will shut down all vaccination drives in public schools and will stop sending "postcards or other notices reminding teenagers to get their second dose of the coronavirus vaccines."

The revelations about Tennessee going full anti-vax drew horrified reactions -- check some out below.

U.S. COVID Cases Double in 3 Weeks As Delta Variant Spreads

After months of precipitous decline in COVID-19 cases thanks to the vaccines made widely available in the United States, the number of new cases per day is on the rise again. According to data from John Hopkins, the seven-day average of positive tests doubled from 11,300 on June 23 to over 24,000 on Wednesday.

The primary driver for the increase in cases is the more transmissable Delta variant, which in early July began to make up the majority of new infections in the U.S. “When the Delta strain appeared, it rapidly became the dominant strain,” pediatric infectious-disease expert Dr. Andrew T. Pavia told CNBC. “If you think about what it means to have a virus take over that rapidly, it means that it is the most fit virus, that it is spreading more efficiently, that it is spreading in pockets that are unvaccinated, and it’s causing a lot of disease and a lot of stress.”

The overlap of a more contagious virus and pockets of vaccine hesitancy has also caused a serious uptick in states where vaccination rates lag behind the rest of the country. As the Associated Press notes, the five states with the largest two-week jump in cases per capita had lower vaccination rates than the national average of 55.6 percent of Americans who have received at least one shot: Missouri at 45.9 percent, Arkansas at 43 percent, Nevada at 50.9 percent, Louisiana at 39.2 percent, and Utah at 49.5 percent. CDC director Rochelle P. Walensky stated last week that 93 percent of the 173 counties with the highest infection rates have less than 40 percent of residents vaccinated.

However, low vaccination rates aren’t the only factor at play, as all but two states (Maine and South Dakota) have seen their cases rise in the past two weeks. Public-health experts also note that behavior appears to have driven cases up. “It is certainly no coincidence that we are looking at exactly the time that we would expect cases to be occurring after the July Fourth weekend,” Dr. Bill Powderly, co-director of the infectious-disease division at Washington University’s School of Medicine in St. Louis, told the AP.

At this point in the pandemic — with over 90 percent of American seniors vaccinated — there are some concerns that daily caseloads are not the most important metric for tracking the spread of the coronavirus in a nation where the population is now at far less risk of hospitalization or death, as New York’s David Wallace-Wells wrote yesterday. Still, deaths are at an average of 260 per day and are taking their toll almost exclusively among the unvaccinated population: According to NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci, over 99 percent of those who died from the coronavirus in June had not received the vaccine. To help boost vaccination rates in states where they are lacking, several Republican leaders have come forward urging residents to get vaccinated — countering the vaccine skepticism broadcast on television on a nightly basis. “If you’re a football fan, we’re in the red zone” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. “But we’re not in the end zone yet. And we need to keep preaching that getting the vaccine is important.”

'Pfizer COVID vaccine significantly less effective against Delta variant'

The effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine against the Delta variant is “weaker” than health officials hoped, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Friday, as 855 people tested positive for coronavirus and more countries were listed as places of high infection.

 

“We do not know exactly to what degree the vaccine helps, but it is significantly less,” Bennett said.

 

The prime minister held a meeting of top health officials and ministers to discuss the next steps for managing the virus in light of the numbers in Israel and what Bennett described as “the Delta mutation leaping forward around the world, including in vaccinated countries such as Britain, Israel and the US.”

 

He said that in “Britain, in recent days, we have seen a jump in the number of children who are being hospitalized on a daily basis. This is a development that we are aware of; we are dealing with it rationally and responsibly.”

 

The highest number of coronavirus cases since March was diagnosed on Thursday, with 1.52% of tests returning positive, the Health Ministry said in a Friday announcement. 

 

While the spike in daily cases continues, the increase in serious morbidity has remained limited.

 

Of those infected, 52 were in serious condition, two less than the day before. A week earlier, there were 41. In April, with about 5,900 active cases, a similar number as now, more than 340 patients were in serious condition.

 

The likely explanation is that among the current virus carriers, some 2,000 are schoolchildren, and half of them were fully vaccinated. Both groups are very unlikely to develop severe forms of the disease, even though it occasionally happens – at the moment, around 60% of the patients in serious conditions were vaccinated.

Vaccine skeptics and anti-maskers are instead sucking down horse paste — the latest snake-oil "miracle cure" — once they become sick with COVID-19, resulting in an increase in calls to poison control centers, the Daily Beast reported Friday.

 

The horse paste contains ivermectin, which is normally used to treat parasites in humans and livestock but is now being prescribed by quack doctors and promoted in online forums as the latest version of the Trumpian drug hydroxychloroquine.

One of the groups behind the ivermectin craze is America's Frontline Doctors, the Trump-promoted Texas group that includes accused Capitol insurrectionist Dr. Simone Gold and "alien DNA" specialist Dr. Stella Immanuel.

"Devotees have besieged pharmacists with prescriptions from shady online prescribers, forcing pharmacies to crack down and treat the antiparasitic drugs like opioids," the Daily Beast reports. "As human-approved ivermectin prescriptions have been harder to come by, enthusiasts have taken to raiding rural tractor supply stores in search of ivermectin horse paste (packed with 'apple flavor!') and weighed the benefits of taking ivermectin 'sheep drench' and a noromectin 'injection for swine and cattle.'"

As far as its efficacy in treating COVID-19, invermectin remains unproven. Studies touted in support of the drug were later withdrawn or heavily criticized due to errors, leading experts to conclude that further randomized trials are needed. The FDA, meanwhile, has cautioned people against taking drugs intended for large animals because they are highly concentrated.

 

A Texas-based poison control specialist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of repercussions, told the Daily Beast that while there isn't an epidemic of ivermectin overdoses, there has been a noticeable increase in calls.

"The irony is, in a severe ivermectin overdose patients will end up needing to be intubated to protect their airway, meanwhile, a lot of them are taking the ivermectin to allegedly treat their COVID… to avoid ultimately being intubated and placed on a ventilator," the poison control specialist said.
