I know we are a team in transition and there's gonna be ups and downs this season but this novelty of playing the youth, praising a fighting performance from losing position etc is gonna lose its value if we continue to defend like clowns in set piece and open play situations. 16 goals conceded in 8 games is abysmal. Continue at that rate and we'll get nowhere.
Most goals conceded by us since the 70's. Things won't change as long as Zonal marking is around.

Gutted we lost.... But c'mon the spine of our team in years to come will be so full of quality... Mount what a player that guy will be.... Been playing on wings of recent when I though central midfield is his best position...

Tomori...

Mount...

James...

Callum...

Abraham... Will xplode in yrs to come...

Tomori our best defender after Rudiger...

Think Andreas is still ahead of tomori, who does look like an amazing prospect - must be said.

tomori is very fast, strong, and actually good on the ball (twice as good as zouma). What he is lacking right now is discipline and, well experience. For example, he puts pool player onside when kepa saves azpi bounce. He’s just very focused on the player he’s watching and misses the line push. Experience.

Well that may come good in the future, we need to worry about the present. And at the present, our defending is going to cost us anything we might be able to attain this season.

Our zonal marking defending is just as bad as our open play defending.

Pulisic should have came on for Mount. I am struggling to understand why is he on the fringes. Mason was dead at the end, he could barely walk. Frank again with poor choice of subs. Batsuhayi is clearly not a player for this level of football and also you don't take off a striker who is in form. Tammy didn't score today but he got into very good positions and you never know with 20 mins left.

Abraham was limping when he came off. Might have been why Batshuayi came on. Otherwise, Pedro and Pulisic were warming up.

completely agree, you might argue that those 2 injuries fucked us, but still no excuse from Lampard to not play Pulisic, especially when we needed a spark from somewhere.

As good a game Jorginho and kova had, the first goal was on them. Fabinho? Just runs past both with easy and then gets fouled by Andreas as a last resort.

Like frank said after the game, details win games.

Was Mane (pretty sure it was him, lol). Yeah and look at what Jorginho did for the first goal. Ran up to try and block and then turned his back on the shot! He's a leader in the team apparently...

Quite true...

Gonna come with experience yes...

I think the open play defending has improved since United/Leicester/pre season however set piece defending if anything is getting worse, look like conceding every time we face one.

Just a funny thing: if you read the comments here alonso was our worst player, but watching the after match show here, every pundit, kante, frank, and even Klop were praising alonso.

still can’t understand bats tho. I thought tammy had a poor game even aside the miss, his overall play was poor. Swapping him for bats is just burning your last sub tho.

@Tomo yes open play defending has improved, but we need to keep possession better. That’s also part of it esp when under pressure. Mount and Tammy need not be as direct all the time.

Are you genuinely questioning his leadership by not going face first at an attempt at goal?

Defence doing enough to bail out the team. Otherwise, the midfield looks bloody disjointed and Kovacic & Jorginho are useless in defensive situations.
