It "wasn't fair" that we dropped Cudicini for Cech.

It "wasn't fair" that we released Hasselbaink to make room for Drogba.

It "wasn't fair" that Tiago was made redundant to make room for Essien.

It "wasn't fair" that Bridge went down the pecking order so we could sign Ash.

Making tough decisions even when they're a little harsh is what separates the serial winners from the cup teams.

Giroud is  a cult hero at Chelsea.

- Golden boot in Chelsea’s Europa League win

- Memorable FA Cup goals

- Huge goals in Chelsea’s UCL qualification

Always a model professional who never complained when treated unfairly.

True professionalism

I love him he deserve more

There was also the element that Lampard prioritized results more than anything else when last season restarted in June. That's where Giroud benefited from the consistent selection because of his experience and partly also because he delivered the goods. But that was never going to be case this season once Lampard was able to get his players in and start to build for the future. Giroud was never going to be part of our long term plan, he was never going to be in the starting XI week in week out again. It's harsh on Giroud but unfortunately, that's the reality.

Also Oli's known for being very streaky (Arsenal bombed out of two title races when he was number 1 there because of such) so even if we rewarded him with starting this season as number 1 his track record suggests he'd have lost his place fairly quickly.

On another note always makes me laugh that whenever we get a good squad player for some reason a section of the fanbase get giddy and think they should become starters, Remy and Begovic other examples.

It's why I believe Giroud is very much a cup player.

Both he and Tammy are streaky players but if we can learn from last season we can manage both fairly well.

Unfortunately, lifes a bitch. It isn't fair. Good job its only his agent coming out with this. He might get a run, we still have the huge potential for injuries with this crammed schedule and lack of time between the season finishing and starting again so he has to keep plodding along and keep himself ready if hes needed. Like last season.

To be fair, having a Giroud as essentially CF3 is great, as it gives us real depth. Tbh, if he wasn't France's No.9, I do not think he would moan much and we would be glad that we had such options.

The Athletic on Giroud...

https://theathletic.com/2213873/2020/11/23/giroud-balogun-forss-williams/?source=emp_shared_article

Chelsea will consider granting Olivier Giroud’s wish to leave in January as a thank you for the striker’s service to the club since he joined in January 2018.

Giroud has decided he will have to leave Stamford Bridge in the new year unless he plays significantly more over the next few months, as The Athletic first revealed last week. Increased minutes are unlikely because coach Frank Lampard prefers Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham.

The 34-year-old has been told by France coach Didier Deschamps that he needs to have regular first-team football if he wants a starting role at the European Championship next summer.

Giroud made his seventh appearance of the season in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday, but only as a late substitute. It means he has spent just 157 minutes on the pitch for Chelsea during this campaign.

Sources have told The Athletic that Chelsea are sympathetic to Giroud’s situation and there is a very good chance his wish to leave will be granted, reports Simon Johnson.

A final decision won’t be taken at this stage because the club will understandably want to wait and see if there are injury issues to their forward players, particularly first choice centre-forwards Werner and Abraham.

But it is understood that should Chelsea have a fit squad in January and the team is still winning consistently like they are at the moment, then a transfer will be discussed with any interested clubs. It is believed his departure won’t necessarily depend on the west London club bringing in a replacement either.

Giroud is highly thought of within Stamford Bridge. He has scored 29 goals in 95 appearances (47 of which were as a substitute) since arriving from Arsenal nearly three years ago. He has helped Chelsea win the FA Cup (2018), Europa League (2019) and was one of their best performers during the run-in last season when they secured a top-four finish.

In the past Chelsea have rewarded players who have requested a move in similar circumstances as a way of showing respect for what they’ve done for the club. For example, Cesc Fabregas was granted a switch to Monaco in January 2019, while Branislav Ivanovic left for Zenit St Petersburg two years earlier.

Giroud’s agent Michael Manuello told Telefoot that a move to another Premier League club is a possibility, but that a transfer abroad appeals most. The striker came close to joining Inter Milan 10 months ago and the Serie A side remain keen.

Manuello said: “Olivier is looking for a place where he can enjoy playing, have a good quality of life and feel strong emotions. So if he can ever discover something new again, he will look for something new. It would be ideal for him to discover another culture.

“A new English club with big goals could also make him think because the Premier League remains an extraordinary league, which offers a different sort of pleasure. So, if a great Premier League club came along, yes, he might think about it but he is ready to go and live abroad.”

Well if he really throws a tantrum we should let him leave but I would much rather keep him. We are never gonna find a 3rd striker this good

yeah he's just too good to be third option as he shows for France (and for us not so long ago).

IMO Giroud is a lot better than Abraham right now, but I do understand why the club is betting on Abraham to improve and become a better player.

The thing with Abraham and Giroud is that they each have something that the other person lacks. For instance, Abraham's hold-up play isn't quite as good as Giroud (yet, maybe) but Giroud doesn't have Abraham's pace and mobility.

Based on how Lampard wants us to play, having pace, mobility, agility etc is important and given he is also trying to build a team for the future, it's also clear why Abraham is preferred over Giroud. Giroud was never going to be part of our long term plan, especially where being first choice is concerned.

Yeah good point.

Strangely enough, Abraham is also not an aerial threat, which makes him a hard pick against Werner, IMO.

Werner has all that plus some (more skill, intensity, and pace)... can't see Abraham starting a lot of games when everybody is healthy, but good option to have.

Justa beautiful headed goal. Super difficult to generate this much power and height on a balll that basically goes up and down vertically especially with a diagonal run up like Giroud had to take.Perfect timing as well. These kind of actions win you games. That is why we need to keep him at all costs.

Chelsea's Giroud getting better with age, says Lampard

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-soccer-champions-ren-che/chelseas-giroud-getting-better-with-age-says-lampard-idUKKBN2850C0

Chelsea's Giroud getting better with age, says Lampard - CNA

(Reuters) - Olivier Giroud is a model professional for the Chelsea squad and the 34-year-old striker seems to be getting better with age, manager Frank Lampard said after the Frenchman scored a late winner against Stade Rennais in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Giroud has yet to start a Premier League or Champions League game this season but came on as a second-half substitute and scored in stoppage time to seal Chelsea’s 2-1 win and a place in the knockout stages.

“Everybody kind of feels from the outside what a great professional he is, how highly-regarded he is by his team mates and myself,” Lampard told reporters.

“He’s so professional in how he trains and looks after himself that age isn’t even a factor for him. He’s getting better with age if anything, in terms of how he looks after himself.”

Lampard has preferred Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham ahead of Giroud and the striker’s lack of minutes prompted France coach Didier Deschamps to tell him to sort out his situation ahead of next year’s Euros.

But with Chelsea set to play 10 games in six weeks, Lampard said more game time is in store for Giroud, who is France’s second-highest scorer with 44 goals.

“He offers a lot for us and I keep saying it but the big schedule coming up and the way we play means I will rely on players,” Lampard added.

“Thankfully for me he’s a player that always keeps the right attitude if he’s not playing regularly and I know when I call upon him that he comes in as he did today.”

A few minutes at the back end of a game won't keep him at SB with the Euro's a few months away. Deschamps has already warned he needs games and I'm not sure Frank will give him much more than cameos as his career ebbs away. I think there will be a meeting between the 2 parties and Giroud will move on. The team selections suggest Tammy had edged ahead of OG.

Great attitude from him all the way
