As good as he has been these past several months, objectively, he's a defender that is largely supported by the system. All of them are bar Thiago Silva.

If he were to leave, I say go all out for Bastoni next summer.

As much as I love Bastoni's game, I'd go for a monster type defender since we would be lacking some power and muscle with Rudi gone.

Rüdiger seems like one of the guys that’s key to the teams spirit and tenacity. Unless his agent is asking for something silly like 250k+ per week I don’t understand what’s taking so long for us to tie him down.

I'm more concerned about Tuchel, PSG lost players (Silva) against his wishes and that started a slippery slope. In the end, it needs to be realistic and objective, but ultimately, we are paying nobodies £100k+ a week to do nothing but sit in the reserves or u23's games.

Keep TT happy, at all costs.

That's a good point. Seems Tuchel has formed a strong bond with Rudiger out of everyone.

I hope both the player and the club meet half way somewhere.

His agent is asking for something silly like 250kpw that is exactly the problem.

Big difference between the situation of Silva at PSG and Rudiger here.

Silva would likely have accepted a one year deal on the same wages or probably even accepted a small pay cut to stay at PSG and was simply discarded.

Such a decision would probably be comparable to if we chose not to extend Azpi against Tuchel's wishes, despite him likely being prepared to accept a year extension on similar wages.

I'm sure the club want Rudiger to stay, but as reports suggest he wants roughly double his current salary.

I heard it is 200kpw. And we should pay it because what is the alternative? Losing him for free and paying 50-60m for another defender plus wages.

De Ligt has 150m release clause next summer and is on bigger wages.

Lacroix is on €28kpw, costs €35m, is just 20 years old and already the best defender in Bundesliga.

Rio Ferdinand names new "best centre-back" in Premier League

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/rio-ferdinand-Chelsea-antonio-rudiger-25032068

Antonio Rudiger is now one of the first names on the team sheet after a major in defence for the Blues.

The Germany international was on the scoresheet against Tottenham in their 3-0 win and Ferdinand was full of praise.

However, Chelsea are in a sticky situation with the centre-back's contract expiring at the end of the season.

He said: "Since Tuchel has come I think he’s arguably been the best centre-back. I think him and Dias would have been close but the effect he has had on his team has been immense.

I see comments by Rio Ferdinand saying he's the best center back in the league - seems like a cunningly thought out comment to up the pressure on Chelsea to spend the money or risk losing face by letting him walk.

I hardly think £3m a year (the difference atm between our offer and what Rudiger wants) matters much when we are on the verge of going £70m in the BLACK for our window (a + £53m atm, and another £17m in a little over 3 months if (it is likely, he is off to a great start already) Lokomotiv make Anjorin a perm buy, Plus we still have 5 players to sort out in January that were stuck here (Barkley, Sarr, RLC, Lewis Baker, and Musonda)
