Hazard pretty much already has a free role and I doubt Conte is going to allow another one and have only 8 players doing the work against the opposition. And Pirlo was able to play at a high level for as long as he did because the pace and intensity are much lower in Serie A than the Premier League. Do you really think he would have survived that long had he been playing in the Premier League? Also, it's all good saying we'll playing the 3-5-2 a lot next season but do we have the squad depth to do that? We currently only have 3 CMs - Fabregas, Kante and Bakayoko - and what if one of them gets injured or suspended? Matic is leaving. There's no hint of us using someone from the academy and even if we do that, the quality might not be there. And there's nothing suggesting that we're after another midfielder in the market. To your first point, I'm not saying Cesc would just stand there like a cardboard cut-out when we don't have the ball. Of course he would still put in effort on the defensive end. He just won't have an enormous responsibility to chase people around like he would in a midfield 2. It won't be disastrous having him in the middle of the park against top teams if there's another pair of legs around him. The depth point is a good one. We are indeed short there if Matic is off. I just hope that at least in the big games against top half opposition (and particularly against the "big 6" where winning the midfield battle is key) we employ the 3-5-2. Having that 3rd midfielder in there when most of the good sides use 2 could be hugely beneficial. For example, that powerful midfield 2 of Dembele & Wanyama that Spuds employ wouldn't be able to bully us and press as relentlessly when they're outnumbered. Barbara 15,149
Why not? Hazard can play just off the striker as a second forward. I'd be shocked if we don't see the 3-5-2 a bunch this season. Less running around chasing opposition midfielders and attackers for Cesc means less fatigue and drain of his stamina. If a 36 year old Pirlo could play the role at an elite level I see no reason Cesc can't. They have the same skill set. Doesn't have to be every match, but I'd love to give it a go as our main formation.Conte already said we didn't have the players to play 352 and adding only Baka doesn't change that. So unless we bring the strikers to make it work, no, we won't feature a lineup with this system one single time Blue-in-me-Veins and Leif

I expect to see it even more next year, as in from kick off sometimes.

Mourinho played Fabregas as the No.10 and ahead of two defensive midfielders on numerous occasions in the past and I don't recall us ever really bossing the opposition. 4 hours ago, Pizy said: I'm confident that our future business will allow us to experiment with it. Should get the business done first before even thinking of experimenting with different formations. If I am not wrong Mou played him in front of matic and mikel. I always wonder what happen instead of two holders, we play one dynamic player ala Ramires. Cesc - Rami Matic But we sold Rami to china for good money and he was injured for a while. Maybe Conte can try it next season with Baka instead of Rami. I am on the side where Cesc should play all the time, when cesc does not play our offence is just hard to watch. Hazard need to work so hard to create everything.  yuvala

Main reason for Hazard going up a level this season is the close link up's he has enjoyed with Alonso and Pedro, the 3-4-3 has allowed that to happen. Changing to 3-5-2 would take away that instantly. I just can't see it ever being our main formation while Eden's here. I'm just not sure using the 3-4-3 every single match is going to be feasible now that everyone will be better prepared for it. Tomo

Quite the contrary, actually. Cesc's technical ability is perfectly fine to play in tight spaces. However, he is slow, unmobile and lacks any sort of explosiveness ; thus rendering him unable to use his technic when he is in this kind of situation.
