Fernando Torres

Just quickly, while we're on the subject of weather, a little while ago an Aussie show was making fun of a British news bulletin that was reporting on a 'heat wave' showing people lying shirtless in parks and going to beaches to escape the heat........It was about 20 degrees. That's a chilly day in Oz.

Toughen up Poms.

One last dig by the Aussie media before the ashes massacre begins...

Chelsea's Fernando Torres emerges as Arsenal transfer target to partner Gonzalo Higuain

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wants to bring Fernando Torres to the Emirates, write Dean Jones and Dave Kidd of the Sunday People .

And Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is ready to let the Spaniard leave.

The shock Gunners move comes as Blues insiders claim Mourinho considers only FIVE of the Chelsea squad are certain starters for the new season.

Spanish wizard Juan Mata and Brazil defender David Luiz are NOT among the five – and could also be waving farewell to the Premier League this summer.

But it’s news of Arsenal’s move for striker Torres – who is wanted at the Emirates along with Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain – that will create shockwaves.

The ambitious Gunners board are desperate for star signings after years of letting their biggest names leave.

Lol, this is the biggest joke ever.

Well then I'm a more than a man then. Winter averagely is -19C here with bunch of snow.

then you are surely not in Zambia.

Back to Torres:

2010 World Cup with a couple of futile sub-apppearances and literally not contribution to the team. - World Champion

2012 wins Champions League with his only countable contribution in the knock-out stages being an assists vs an unorganized benfica and an unnecessary goal vs Barca when he had only the goalie in front of him - CL winner

2012 wins European Championships with one full and two sub appearances scoring two saveable goals vs a depleted Shay Given and Ireland and one after the match is already decided. Wins golden boot because he also assists a 4th goal when he is too chicken to shoot himself and on least minutes needed for the three goals - European Champion and European Golden boot

2013 wins Fifa confed cup and golden boot because of 4 goals against Tahiti

Yeah, right... Even though he would be an upgrade to Giroud, Arsenal still can't afford to pay even half his wages.

Guys give the guy a break.

Yes he hasnt lived up to what was expected of him at chelsea, but please lets not ridicule and trivialise his entire career.

He was world class upto the season in which he signed for us and was murdering teams for a long time.

Give credit where due and criticism where due.

If he didnt score vs Tahiti, then people would have been on his case. He scored 4 and everyone is still on his case. When a player scores 4 in a game, he deserves a breather.... a few days without Torres-Bashing.

What I find funny is that although he and Mata won the same things, (save for the 08 EC/11 U21 WC) Torres is the only one who is constantly "mocked" with not contributing anything to those achievements, whereas Mata - who was, let's say, gifted a WC and an Euro, (and except his assist in the final, he was at most average in the CL as well) - is worshipped because of his trophy collection.

[And this is coming from someone whose favourite player is Mata]

LoL who is counting Mata's trophies at National Team level and worships him for the few appearances he makes with Spain, he is worshiped because he has been integral to us winning the CL and being our best player the past season.

i think only u worship mata because of his "trophy collection"... the rest of us do because of his brilliant play-making, passing, vision etc etc. and that is where the difference lies between mata and torres.

Guys, guys, I think you misunderstood me, I didn't phrase it very well.

The point I was trying to make is that it's interesting to see that how people's attitude towards two player's same achievements are affected by their other performances. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Also, I don't worship Mata because of his trophy collection, there is really no need to put words in my mouth.

i think performance should be the sole criteria to judge how valuable a player is. i think that is the only reason mata won our player of the season 2 times in 2 years whereas torres is ridiculed by his own set of fans.

i was not putting words into any1's mouth. but when u hear some1 saying that mata "is worshipped because of his trophy collection." , u do start to wonder who exactly thinks that.

All right, maybe the word "worship" wasn't the best, but I just wanted to point out the difference between the evaluation of the 2 of them.

You are absolutely right that performance should be the only criteria, but we are talking about club and national team, which are a bit different.

Torres contributed more to the WC and Euro wins than Mata in my opinion, but I haven't seen anyone questioning the level of Mata's contribution towards them, whereas from time to time, you can see bitter remarks about Torres's. This is actually understandable, because Mata is playing exceptionally on club level, while Torres is utter shit most of the time, so people base their opinion on that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I just wanted to say that I find this phenomenon interesting. Again, sorry if that wasn't clear for the first time.
