UCL Draw Thread

This should be like tennis. There are 8 seeds (teams with the best coefficients) and all the other 24 are randomly drawn.

But as it isn't like that, at least RM, Barça, and Bayern are in the same pot as we are so we won't have any of them (in addition to both Manchester teams). Having Borussia though would be tough as well as Juve (in a lesser degree). The rest is the rest imo and while there are quality teams, we should be able to face them. PSG and Monaco included.

Can someone explain me why Juventus isnt on Pot 1 ?

That's because their UEFA coefficient is average. It is based on their results in Europe which until last season, they didn't participate for a couple of seasons and even when they did before that, they didn't exactly did well in European competitions.

After last season i want the weakest group possible, i remember in previous years some want a tough group for entertainment, after last year i don't think ill be alone now in wanting the easiest group possible, get this done after 4/5 matchday's.

Y is dortmund still in pot 3??

That's because there are other teams who have done better than Dortmund over the past few seasons. Here's how UEFA calculate the coefficient:

The club coefficient rankings are based on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Coefficient calculation

Clubs' coefficients are determined by the sum of all points won in the previous five years, plus 20% of the association coefficient over the same period (33% before 2009).

Apart from last season, Dortmund hardly did anything of note in Europe in recent seasons in terms of getting wins. Hence, that is why they are where they are in the pot allocations right now.

Could we be in danger of dropping down to pot 2 if we have another poor CL campaign? lets be honest 11/12 aside we haven't done anything of any note in the CL since Hiddink was around.

Stupid rules when something a club did or didn't do five years ago still affects their chances in the draw. Clubs like Porto and Benfica literally can't fail to qualify for the Champions League through their domestic league and even if they don't get past the Group Stage they still get a decent amount of points for their coefficient and because of that they're always in either Pot 1 or 2. Then there are clubs like Man City, Dortmund, Juventus, PSG etc. who are way more likely to do well than the Portuguese but because they weren't this good five years ago they're now punished in the draw and given much tougher groups, making it even harder for them to do any better in the competition this time around. In my opinion they should make it that the points accumulated in the previous season or two would be multiplied, making it much easier for clubs who do well one year to get easier groups the next time they participate. For example it's nothing short of a joke that last year's finalist Dortmund are in Pot 3. They will need to get very lucky to get an easy group and on the other hand it's very tough luck for the team in Pot 1 who draws a team of Dortmund's quality from Pot 3 when someone else gets a team like FC Copenhagen. Anyway, there's nothing us fans can do about it so no point complaining.

After last year's farce I want an easy group, maybe something along the lines of Ajax, Anderlecht and Dinamo Zagreb. However, I could bet a house on us ending up in the same group with Rafa Benitez' Napoli?

Unlikely. It will require us to do really badly and more importantly, the teams below us in the coefficient ranking to do extremely well. If this happens for next few seasons, then yeah, we might well drop into Pot 2 but definitely not this 1 season alone.

And it also kinda depends by how poor you mean there...

This use to be my favourite time of year. Waiting for the draws to come out whilst sitting on flight comparison websites and book nice and cheap ASAP. Hope we get Ajax and some stinking Eastern European team for the fans :D

oh mate, if legia won that tie and got to group stages, and somehow they drew Chelsea that would make me life as i'm going to college to our capitol in September so I could get on the same sector with you bloody islanders.
