This story appears in ESPN The Magazine's Jan. 7 NEXT Issue.

A MERE 54 CLUB starts in Brazil and a tournament-clinching hat trick in the final of the 2011 Under-20 World Cup put Oscar Dos Santos Emboaba Junior on Europe's radar. But even after Chelsea secured his services for $40.3 million in July, few could have predicted that the young prospect would star so quickly. His mature decision-making and calm passing -- not to mention a right foot capable of driving the ball at goal from drone-strike distance -- have combined to shatter the stereotype that Brazilians lack the mental and physical toughness to prosper in the English Premier League. Although his Chelsea career is just beginning, Oscar admits his mind often drifts ahead to the summer of 2014, when Brazil will host the World Cup. Oscar wears the coveted No. 10 for his country, previously worn by Pele, Zico and Kaka. "The No. 10 shirt is historic, and there is a huge amount of pressure surrounding it," Oscar says. "I try not to think about it, focusing instead on the skills I have that allowed me to live up to it in the first place."

Oscar became an instant sensation on Sept. 19, when he made his full Chelsea debut in a critical Champions League test against Juventus. In the 31st minute, he blasted the ball from 20 yards to open the scoring. Two minutes later, he repeated the feat, curling it into the top-right corner from 25 yards.

At the moment, I'm not exactly too impressed with Oscar. I like what he does off the ball in terms of closing down the opposition, man-marking an opponent etc but on the ball, have yet to really see him producing it for us especially in the Premier League. I know it's only his first season in England but would expect a little bit more from him.

He was not really helped by Luiz and Lampard.

I think he would really shine if we changed to a 4-3-3 with two new midfielders and could be used as a connection between Hazard and Mata.

I don't think he was helped when the rest around him were playing poorly. Having said that, I wasn't just talking about yesterday's game alone. It's his performance over the number of games he has played in this season.

He's only just turned 21, playing in a league 10 times more physical than the one he is used to and due to his arrival from the Brazillian league he already played way more games than anyone else (I think).

He's clearly going to be a top top player. Some of you lot are so impatient.

he's not enough good for chelsea.i saw it for a long time

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

This kid has the potential to be the best in the world. He has the technique, he has the vision and he also has tremendous workrate and commitment.

Personally I think he'll drop back into the midfield and play in the role we targeted Modric for (like Alonso at Real), but he hasn't really been used there yet which is a real shame.

We can see he has a potential and maybe in 2 3 years he'll be good yes but he's done nothing atm

:banghead:

Arguably the best player for us in the Champions League.
