It was no way a success. He played in the midflied mostly agaisnt shittty teams, flopped hard against benfica and any decent opposition.

We clearly have a very different understanding of what an experiment is. I frankly do not understand what people were expecting of him, considering again, he does not practice in that position.

Perhaps people who don't like fantastic goals and assists and prefer sideways passing would rather see other type of player there for sure - not my case though.

you mean aside from the spectacular goals and assists from a player playing completely out of position and on CB training schedule (no focus on stamina, midfield movement, etc). Or our absolutely fantastic win ratio while he played in the midfield?!

In my view, and apparently several articles out there, as an experiment it was a rotund success! Whether it should be pursued or not depends on a number of different factors though.

He had more goals and assists on average playing from the back. And of course our win ratio was better because he only played there against weaker sides. The experiment was an absolute failure because he was constantly out of position, gave the ball away too easily and a bunch of other problems I won't get into again. I've already made these points countless times on here. It was evident for everyone that the performance of our midfield was terrible against any half decent side when Luiz played in there.

that's a very personal opinion to which you are entitled to, of course. However, you write as fact while a mere quick google search will provide very different views.

I've read a few like this one: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1654066-david-luiz-why-chelsea-should-play-him-solely-in-midfield-next-season

Those are just trends among pundits. There is hardly any analysis in there. I bet half those article writers only watch the highlights of our matches at most. The opinions of our own fans account for much more, imo. Most our fans wanted Luiz tried in midfield before last season and by the end of it most of them were convinced that he can't play there and only belongs in defense because we saw his weaknesses there.

In terms of why I think that experiment has failed, we've discussed this for a very long time in the past. Here is a previous post of mine that explains my point: http://forum.talkchelsea.net/topic/13527-04-david-luiz/?p=658954

Don't get me wrong, I also prefer David in defense, BUT I still think it's absolutely crazy to say the *experiment* was an "absolute failure."

In other words, give him a proper preseason along with time training in that position and he may address many of his deficiencies. Because, in my opinion, and many others apparently, David as a gifted natural footballer could indeed do exceptionally well in midfield. Again, whether Chelsea have the need, time, or inclination goes beyond the merits and conclusion of the experiment, which by the way, was repeated over and over again.

Since we have completely opposite views on Mikel, it may be that we value completely different things in a midfielder. Which might explain our different positions concerning David in midfield.

Fair enough.

David is 27 next season, if he was still 21 or under we could maybe look at it, but it's too late now and i really do not see the issue of him at CB just because he is good at football, if anything that makes us more unpredictable.

The in general "luiz in midfield" thing with all the British pundits shows why England are so far behind the other top footballing nation's. They don't take to defenders unless their a put your body on your line and lump it forward kind off defender, proper old school.

Spectacular goals and assists only from midfield? They were mostly from set pieces, and it really doesn't matter where he plays to score them. He actually scored a cracker when he did play as a CB against Fulham. Also his assist for the Torres goal against Rubin Kazan was when he played CB. Where he plays doesn't affect his ability to score screamers or provide great assists.

Who? Luiz?! That experiment failed a while ago.

Played 15 games in DM.

we won 12, drew 1 and lost 2 of those ( vs qpr when fsw rested mata, hazard n rami and vs swansea when ivanovic was not sure which side he was playing for).we scored 43 goals (2.8 per game) and conceded 13 goals (.87 per game) in these 15.

Sure lets term that as a failure.

Good lord. Thats a pretty inverted view of the game.

He played out of position in midfield, but to call the experiment a failure is complete bollocks (shocker). He provided us something we were lacking in that midfield and that was passion and drive. He didn't have the fitness levels required but he still stepped up when other players in that position showed a distinct lack of drive, passion and bollocks at times.

He is still very much a CB but he showed his true colours last season when he did a job he wasn't familiar with to the best of his abilities which is why he gets so much love from the fans (and is also the reason other players simply don't receive the same level of affection within Stamford Bridge).

Exactly. You can say that he has not been sufficiently tested vs the top teams while playing in the pivot. That would be sensible.

But to say, 'david luiz in midfield' experiment failed is downright stupidity.
