OneMoSalah 8,886
I read a few pages back and want to add my two cents to this Luiz > Mikel shit that is being posted.Ok Luiz was good in a few games - against smaller teams right enough - but still how does that justify that hes better than Mikel? Hes an alternative option there until Romeu is back fit and Mikel is back from the ACON.Luiz is still reckless, makes ridiculous challenges on players. This was evident as a center half, still is as a defensive midfielder. He has great distribution, not as accurate as Mikels but you could say he goes for the 'spectacular' pass every now and then risking possession rather than Mikel who always prefers to play a simpler pass that doesn't risk possession. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.Luiz in my opinion also doesn't demonstrate a calm figure on the pitch, hes his own worst enemy 9/10 times, in games last season and sometimes this season he has lost the plot, lost his head when he shouldn't and we have payed for it or nearly have. Mikel is much more calmer on the ball it has to be said, hes not afraid to get the ball in sticky situations where hes got a marker tight on him, always there as an option, always moving to get the ball. Yes hes not always as forward thinking as Luiz but hes a steady passer who is capable of that killer pass when needed, also concedes possession less than Luiz. This has been more evident this year, for sure, also last year. Actually I seen him today or yesterday play an awesome through ball for a goal for Nigeria. Can't remember who it was who scored but it was a nice pass. You can say Mikel vs Juve cost us our place the in the CL bla bla bla bla bla but imo you have to look at JT and think 'What are you doing there mate?', trying to play offside when the guy has just recieved the ball, I also feel Cech didn't cover himself in glory tbh, he read the situation wrong and thought Quageralla (fuck the guys name honestly, unsure how to spell it) was going to just leather it so he kinda threw himself at it but still its more JT and the teams fault more than anything. When we are being pressed who would you rather have the ball, Mikel or Luiz? I know vs Swansea Luiz wasn't great on the ball when pressed, Mikels presence and calmness was desperately missed. In that 1-1 game at the Liberty Stadium I thought Mikel was the best player on the pitch for us, whenever he had the ball, there was 2 Swansea players coming towards him but he kept it really well, I don't think Luiz would have done the same, hes very risky with the ball, games vs Napoli and a whole load under AVB last year is evidence. Can't say hes really changed much since then, still charges forward, still plays some risky passes. His reading of the game is poor sometimes, hes rash just dives in when its unnessecary and concedes a foul/leaves space for opposition players. Mikel is a much better reader of the game.Still Luiz takes a mean freekick, I'll give him that. Hes a good passer when he doesn't overcomplicate things (like the risky passes he fizzes into players) and go for those 50 m passes to Floppes which should result in a booking for timewasting because Torres is just jobby. If Luiz can iron out certain things, be a bit calmer in the game, use his head more and not overreact, stop being as rash with tackles, read the game better, have better positioning at certain moments etc, he will be a top CB. Hes a good CB right now but that inconsistancy and issues that can sometimes be his problem are holding him back. Hes improved a lot physically, he looks a bit bulkier since he joined the club which credit due to him has helped him more in my opinion. Hes good in the air as well and fast on the turn so he has all the required tools to be a top CB. Still needs to mature a bit, maybe when hes in his prime years we might see this top CB that I believe he can come. Luiz has played less than 8 games in midfield, MIkel has played about 250. That there's even a debate about who is better is a sad indictment of Mikel and his inability to convince the vast majority of supporters of his importance to the team (yes I'm sure all those fans are to thick to understand what his job is despite them adoring Claude Makelele).I've been one of Luiz's biggest critics but he's been great in the last couple of months in defence and midfield. He's become a big presence in the team and someone that the players and fans look to for passion and enthusiasm. He isn't perfect by any means but he's shown a capacity to learn which is encouraging. robsblubot 3,595
Luiz in my opinion also doesn't demonstrate a calm figure on the pitchVery interesting point... but why would you want a very calm squad that may border complacency? David is one of the most aggressive players in the squad and I believe Chelsea value him for that.It seems Chelsea FC have been going through a change of stature that some supporters haven't yet fully embraced or even accepted. The proper and composed are't in fashion at Chelsea based on how they've building the squad. Roman does not seem to want proper dependable players who do well in a wet pitch at Stoke. He's, I reckon, attempting to build a squad that can dominate in Europe.Let me try to make my point clearer: Chelsea need their players to provide an edge against the other top sides. Of course Chelsea would like David to develop and become more composed, dependable, and less prone to mistakes, which happens naturally as players age (especially defenders). However, they believe, and they possess a lot more info than we do, that David can become a dominant player; that's what the amount we paid for him as well as his new wages tell me. Cant one argue the same thing about Terry? Or even Drogba back in the days. That doesnt make him a less talented player.2. You have to realize that luiz and mikel play in TOTALLY different ways. If luiz took the "mikel role" and played those easy, short passes his accuracy would be as high or even higher.3. You say Mikel is calmer. That might be true. But in being calmer and more "careful" in a way you sometimes lose. Luiz goes in 100% in every situation, sometimes that lead to a faul, other times he stops a really dangerous attack. Also Luiz is alot quicker than Mikel so you cant really compare them like that.I guess what I want to say is that Luiz could evolve to a top CB (he already is imo) but could just as easily become a top class DM. He is versitile in this case and could play both roles tbh.
Tomo 21,751
Potentially world class with a few rough edges, Jose coming in this summer would be perfect for Luiz.As for the DM vs CB stance, my position in this remains the same since day one, he is a centre half, end off. Tomo 21,751
You do know he was a DM in his youth years and start of professionalism, dont you?Forgive me if im wrong because i got it from some shitty site, but i heard at the age of 14 he nearly got let go because off poor performances at DM?I don't think he has done that well at DM, apart from the first time in the CWC which in turn got his performances there over hyped. As a centre half he has a few rough edges but imo that is his best position. OneMoSalah
