Completely missing the point. He joined the club and was given the number 14 shirt, which consequently was made official by the club selling his shirts with that specific number on the store. He then left on loan and the number was vacated. If he was never the number 14 then why did they sell his shirts with that number and not a different number.

They were selling shirts with the number 14 on them because that was his number at Genk and that was the number he used during preseason. But he was never given that number or any number because only first team players get numbers and he was never one.

Lukaku who was given a number previously was part of the pre-season tour but not included in the squad, his shirt is on the website. McEachran who was given a number previously was part of the pre-season tour but not included in the squad, his shirt is on the website. Hutchinson who was given a number previously was part of the pre-season tour but not included in the squad, his shirt is on the website. The same for Essien, Kakuta & KdB.

Chalobah who was NOT given a number previously and was a part of the pre-season tour but not included in the squad, his shirt ISN'T on the website. If they were selling shirts based on pre-season then Chalobah's would be there to. So would Blackman's, so would Saville's.

(Sorry to go to such lengths but I'm certain he was given one, + I'm bored ;))

A kit # shouldn't be a big deal. i agree on that one.

Although it's just a simple fact that players are very sensible as it comes to these matters.

I don't know if Kevin is like that... maybe he couldn't care less?! Could well be, but maybe he does!

But if Schürrle took a number that was clearly already used by another chelsea player... one could ask himself the question why?

  • KDB have chosen #6 (or another new #) himself => all smiles and they lived happily ever after!
  • KDB might go on loan again => #14 is free.
  • The board/manager have chosen #14 for Schürrle => completely the wrong message towards KDB (who needs confidence)!
  • Schürrle claimed the # himself and the board approved => this would be completely f*cked up!

I would think option 1 is the most plausible. All 3 others would be very stupid IMO!

All here saying his number was free... give me a break <_< . He actually played in it (so one could actually think he have chosen it himself last summer)!

The 3 you mentioned all were part of our first team squad at some point in the 2011-12 season so those numbers were once theirs. When they left us on loan their numbers became 'free' but they continued to sell the shirts with the numbers. The reason Kevin's shirt is on there but not Chalobah's is simply because of popular demand. There is no rule or methodology for the kits available on the website, it is simply about selling the biggest number of kits.

The numbers were once theirs, so they continued selling 12/13 shirts with those numbers, just like Kevin. Chalobah has never been given a number, neither has Courtois, Kalas, and numerous other players on loan.

I doubt it. The Chelsea page of wiki says he currently has no decided number and so does the official Chelsea website. Never saw anything about his number being changed to 23. So unless a more credible source of information says so, I'd better keep my doubts.
