"Gary Cahill has to some extent occasional back problems. We were a bit concerned with the flight and the artificial pitch, so in a choice of taking him or Smalling, I went with Smalling."

'Occasional' back problems? That's news. Guess it's just a minor thing since we hadn't heard it being mentioned before the England match.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is running out of time to secure a new long-term contract with the Blues, reports The Sun.

The 6ft 4in centre-back turns 30 in three weeks on December 19th, with the West London club having a policy of only offering one-year deals to players over that age.

so he's getting his height boosted, and breaking our contract policy? undeserved. far better players have complied with it.

He's been excellent since coming back into the side in the past couple of matches. His performance against Spurs was his best for us in a long while, imo.

yes, he usually does really well when we employ a low block and so does Terry.

On the other hand, Zouma is the only CB we've got who is comfortable with a high defense line.

If we do want to change our style of play, we need to think about the type of players we want. Not entirely sure Jose is the right guy for that considering he has always played with a low block.

John Stones would be a step in the right direction.

Cahill is a weird one because he does have the pace to do well in a high line defense. I don't understand why no one has been able to coach him how to do better with his positioning and decision making.

Also, I've seen Christensen playing a high line a few times for Gladbach so far and he looks promising. He's got the pace and awareness but best of all he looks so comfortable on the ball.

Difficult to know what he is missing as he's not the slowest as you point out. Reckon it's not necessarily speed but lack of agility and acceleration which might have made him uncomfortable From the start. This Ship has sailed though

His problem is in his mind, not his body. He serves as a decent example that playing in a high line or with less protection and cover is less about physicality and more about tactical understanding and speed of thought.

Pique for example is anything but athletic. He possesses the turning speed of a Russian tank, isn't flexible and it takes him a minute before he reaches top speed but he's completely comfortable high up.

Pepe used to be a great athlete but was never the best high up.
