The fact Benayoun decided to choose 10 in the first place, tells you the type of person he is. He thought he was above this football club, and deluded himself into thinking he was worthy of a first team number.

Benayoun DID NOT demand this number, he always loved the number 15 on his shirt, but 15 was Malouda's already,

so our club probably decided to offer him the number 10, because Joe left and 10 was available. So he said yes.
