Henrique 9,133
Ivanovic is not a true right back, he looks very uncomfortable pushing up and lacks the speed to cover speedy wingers.yet he is the best right back we had in years.
Madmax 9,219
Before Ivano you'd have to go back to Danny Petrescu if you'd to name a quality RB at Chelsea. I don't want us to spend a truckload on VdW, he's going to be back up anyway. Rather keep Bosingwa/Paulo for one more year and then promote Billy Clifford to the first team. SinineUltra 1,170
Ivanovic is not a true right back, he looks very uncomfortable pushing up and lacks the speed to cover speedy wingers. You're right, he is not the conventional RB but then again, he is a beast, no winger can outmuscle him ( infact out of all the players i think only the 8-feet Christopher Samba of Blackburn can) and with proper positioning it is really hard to get past him, also he plays with his heart and soul. When it comes to attacking, i mean he comes forward and does different combinations on the wing. Only things i can think that are his weaknesses are technique with the ball (dribbling) and he doesen't seem to have the urge to shoot on target though he is one of the free kick takers in Serbian National team - who knows.. plus he offers so much in setplays - offensively and defensively.Hamsik and Sanchez please . We don't need a right back. Ivan is the man. This

Now we have Alex, Terry, David Luiz, and also Ivan who can play CB as well.If Chelsea sells Bosingwa, and Paulo, then it make sense to have somebody like Van der Wiel. Otherwise, it's a waste of money.

But like Terry they are better at defending then going forward.I rather have an in form Bosingwa to rival with A. Cole on the side then Ivan.Ivan is best for CB, IMO. Ivanovic is more defensive, which means there is more of a free role for right wingers/ DMFs who cover his position when he is on attack. But i guess there are different types of players with different traits and flaws.
dodojojo 510
Mas importante? Creative midfielder and wingers. A midfielder who can dribble away from defenders and who can make the final pass. Yossi and Josh M to backup/rotate. Wingers who actually stay wide, cross and pass. Everything else is a bonus.

crazy1 24
Why do we need a right back? Ivanovic is brilliant there, really solid and (apart from Nani in the 09 CS) i cant think of any winger that has got the better of him in that position and his attacking qualities are also very underrated (ala his run to set up Kalou in the San Siro) we scored goals for fun last season with him the 1st choice RB, its when he went to the center this season they dried up, coincidence?Agreed mate.......hes consistent at d RB dan CB............hes so solid der.............Wingers is the main priority and we need 2 of the IMO, please god not Bale, living off the 2 Inter games and the Arsenal and Chelsea ones last season i would want us to stay as far away from his as possible (especially for £40m), Neymar and Sanchez should be the one's we look at and if he is around possibly a return for Rooben aswell.Pls keep him far away from d bridge......he has a quality widout any doubt but for 40 ml i dont think so its a good deal.......... But like Terry they are better at defending then going forward.I rather have an in form Bosingwa to rival with A. Cole on the side then Ivan.Ivan is best for CB, IMO.It has to be said that Ivan is one of our biggest, if not the biggest threat we have with (indirect) set pieces. He always seems to get his head near the ball and has caused a lot of danger in the box with his fysical presence and power when going forward. Have to agree with you he is more of a CB. Way to slow for a RB, especialy when defending against someone like Nani, who can outpace him + his skill is pretty limited.
Bosnian Blue 2,471
Mancienne as a back-up for Bane ?Bane is a fantastic player defensively and a major factor in set pieces,no doubt about that. But,you all keep saying that he is not good enough when it comes to crossing and attacking.Though, nobody mentioned his couple of good runs against Spuds, moving into channels, finding space + he stopped Bale.Definitely, number one RB in Chelsea at the moment.I agree that he must improve especially in that attacking phase and believe that it can and will be done. Also,he rapped Nani in the league match and was never outplayed by any winger. If we go out there and buy a RB then we'll have Luiz,JT,Ivanovic,Alex,Bruma and Mancienne in that CB position. So,I say no to Van der Wiel or any other expensive and overrated RB. Rambo 1,729
Bosingwa was immense during his first season here, it's a shame that injury took so much out of him.
