West Ham say Declan Rice not for sale under any circumstances (naturally), according to @David_Ornstein.

However, the report also states West Ham's interest in signing Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea...

This is kinda funny. They don't want to sell Rice to us but want players from us...

And apparently WH are completely skint from blowing their money last summer. So if they have any hope of buying this window, selling us Rice and using that money may be their only chance to improve their side.

Again, it's surely going to take Rice demanding to go in order for this to happen. This may be WH's only chance to get a huge fee for him because if they get relegated his price drops through the floor.

Emerson + Barkley for Rice?

That would be a great deal for WH. I feel that they would be relegated this season if they dont strenghen. They have a player who can help in doing so, they can address 2 positions with these 2 players.

Difference is, they know how badly Chelsea want to sell Emerson now with Chillwell already been bought but they don't want to sell Rice given how important he is to them.

The way I see it, if they buy Emerson they're doing Chelsea a big favor. Depending on the price of course.

Yes but in some ways, why should we be accommodating to them if they don't want to sell a player we want to us?

Rice is important to them but I don't think I am exaggerating when I say he won't stay there for long and will leave sooner or later. I get the "we don't want to sell our best players" stance but this seems like a battle they will eventually lose out on.

Sure, if he plays the way he did last season he won't be there forever. But Rice is still under contract till 2024 with club option of another year so West Ham have no need to sell yet. If they can keep him for even another year or two they'll probably be more than happy with that and unless his development stagnates completely they'll still get good money for him in 2021 or 2022.

I fully understand their stance on the matter. They won't sell unless someone offers crazy money (thinking £80M) or Rice himself puts in a transfer request and demands to go.

I've always thought the most likely timing for a Rice transfer would be 2021 and stand by that. He won't be coming this year unless the club somehow manage to flog off Jorginho for €40M and decide to go all-in for Rice by offering +70M.

Just forget about Rice and go for Zakaria instead.
I am pretty sure we will still go for Rice just because he is English. There are far better and cheaper options than Rice, but there were also far better and cheaper options than Chillwell out there and it did not stop Lampard to make Chilli the second most expensive LB of all time.
We just have to accept that. An English coach will love to buy English players.

I don't mind missing out on Rice this year. Too many changes in one year. He can continue at West Ham and club can take a call in a year when his value will have decreased and Jorgi/Kante will be sold.

You happy to stay with our CBs if Thiago gets a knock etc? Bens not the strongest defender. I know all our CBs give me palpatations. We need much stronger defence.

It's not only the manager's supposed 'English bias', it's also things like squad chemistry. With a bunch of young English players in the squad already (Tammy, CHO, Mount, Chillwell, James, Tomori) a guy like Rice would fit in the group perfectly both on and off the pitch. For Rice being a member of the Chelsea first squad is his lifelong dream and he'd give everything for the shirt but for a player like Zakaria it would most likely be just another job.

Don't know about you but I give some extra value to players who passionately want to play for the club, even if they cost a little more than some other option. That little bit of extra motivation can go a long way in tight situations and they're also way less likely to agitate a move elsewhere if they reach their full potential and become good enough to be starters for the likes of Barca, Real, Bayern etc.

And I wouldn't say there were 'far better' options for Chillwell. Cheaper definitely, but not necessarily better. Same goes for Rice, I don't think the other alternatives are miles ahead in their ability. Zakaria is two years ahead in his development though (23yo vs Rice 21yo).

Yes. Not saying defense is great but by keeping Tomori on and selling one of Rudi, Chris or Zouma we should get by this season. If Thiago Silva was brought in as a leader to help guide our younger defenders, then it makes sense to keep Tomori at the club.

And I expect the defense to be generally better this year with a better attack in front of them. In most games, scoring a goal simply changes the tasks a defense has to do and too many times last season, the team was unable to get the goals or put themselves in a situation where they were chasing games and the defense got caught out trying to play up.
