All that panicking from some people here in January is still funny.

Yep. Got to admit I wanted a new striker signed too, mainly because I didn't believe for a second Werner was a realistic summer signing and someone like Dembele would've improved chances of CL qualification. But in the end things played out perfectly when CL was achieved with Tammy/Giroud anyway and Werner became available after all.

Maybe this time the club got a bit lucky because the pandemic meant Liverpool dropping out of the race for Werner which nobody could have foreseen in the winter but generally it's always better to wait for the primary targets than settle for a fallback option. We've seen the problem with the likes of Zappacosta etc. that signing someone just for the sake of it rarely works and I don't think Lampard was ever that keen on Dembele.

True. The only signing that would have been beneficial for the long term was signing Dembele from Lyon but would have cost a fortune. The others - e.g. Mertens, Cavani - would have been short term signings and the kind of signings that got us into the mess that we were in to begin with.

I really dont know with Soumare.

Honestly he just reminds me of Bakayoko in terms of he has had only the one decent season and I was wary of Bakayoko when were linked despite the opinion he was the second coming of Yaya Toure, for this exact same reason....

Difference is Soumaré is miles and miles more comfortable on the ball than Bakayoko is.

Mendy will be ours that’s for sure now. It’s a bit like Havertz transfer saga, just the matter of time not if.

Move on to the next and most likely the last one, Declan Rice, is he really worth the big chunk of money? Personally I’m torn, great addition to the squad no doubt due to his versatility but for over 50m? I don’t know. Can anyone who’s watched him regularly shade some lights?

He's the real deal.

Very strong, aggressive defensively (attacks the ball carrier) and great at tackling with both feet (prefers standing tackles). Not an amazing passer aka Fabregas, but more than decent and can certainly pick a pass. Also has great positional awareness from what i've seen.

The fact that he's a natural leader and a Chelsea fan is also a huge bonus

If only he was 50m, might be more expensive than that, which is my biggest worry.

This is also my biggest issue with Declan Rice. 50 million Euros, I would be fine with because Zakaria, who in my opinion is better than Rice, costs exactly 50 million Euros and will be available next season.
Technically way superior than Rice.

Yep, seems like the better idea to wait if Rice isn't available yet.

But I don't think the position is in desperate need of a player there currently. We'll wait for Rice until next year if need be rather than signing someone just to sign them.

Rice has 4+1 years left on contract. So basically till 2025.

Nothing is going to be different next summer.

We have FFP relaxation this season so it does not matter if we sign him now or next summer. This is why I think we will go all in for him very soon...

I cannot say who is better as I have not seen Zakaria. I will take your word he is better.

However, the problem in this situation is the 'romance' of signing Rice.

Chelsea youth product who is a true fan gets cast aside by the club at 14 which breaks his heart. He goes away and becomes a top player for a close rival by the age of 19. Club of his dreams admit there mistake and 'bring him home' at 21 to inherit the Chelsea leader status that has been vacant since Mr. Chelsea, John Terry, left.

The only problem is he is not a top player, actually not even close.
