There’s absolutely a chance that Gittens turns into a very good player. But for me it’s just such a big risk for the price and for where we are currently as a club. My biggest issue with us going for him is that we shouldn’t be taking big risks or chances right now. We’ve done that too much recently and it’s worked out poorly.

You can counter that some of the “big names” we’ve signed also haven’t worked out but I’d rather us go for more experienced, proven players. Adding more young development players to a squad full of those just feels so silly.

We have signed big names on the downhill - Koulibaly, Sterling, Auba, Felix, Sancho

We have not signed big names that are in the 21-26 age group where they've had serious experience and have shown quality over a fairly large sample size. Caicedo, Enzo in 2023 was the only time they've done this.

Regardless - people here binned him off for the most part.

It's not "regardless" at all. No one would have objected to signing him for free.

His issues had nothing to do with ability; they were mental. What Enrique has managed to do with him is nothing short of remarkable. That wouldn't have happened with the merry-go-round at this club.

I was thinking Nkunku, too. I had extremely high hopes for both he and Felix.

We've got the worst situation possible, our targets and signings are all over the place so you can't rely on these idiots to go for absolute class talents or top players while we've also we got a Championship manager who obviously doesn't make the most of the players he has in his squad.

In the last two players alone you've claimed most of the players we've signed are shit and now that the manager isn't PL level.

So how did we finish 4th?

Weak season where many teams failed to maintain advantage or were playing in multiple competitions and they couldn't have the luxury of resting the first team and compete with the 2nd like we did in Conference League.

So I'm guessing you think Eddie Howe and/or the Newcastle squad are terrible then? As they finished below us with no Europe.

Either way, a squad and manager as bad as you say they are won't finish 4th, weak season or not.

Just thinking a bit more about João Pedro. Maresca has had both Nkunku and Felix, two players who don’t have natural positions and can shift all across the attack, and was completely unable to utilize either of them. What exactly would change with Pedro, I wonder? He’s very similar in that isolated up top as a #9 he’s underwhelming and out wide he can be effective but not natural.

Or is the reason he didn’t fancy those two because they are lazy and don’t work hard enough off the ball?

To be fair, City finished three points behind Arsenal in second place after losing seven of their fifteen league games from November to the beginning of February, winning only one-third of them.

As with recent seasons, we have others to thank for our league finishes.

Unless you win the title you always spin it as "having others to thank" to some degree for achieving an objective. Teams in the top 4 race are always going to be inconsistent/erratic.

However this logic can be spun both ways, could just as easily say if it weren't for Jorgenson moment of madness at Villa Park it wouldn't have ended up so tight.

I was just answering the question you posed. I won't even mention Newcastle or Villa for a sec. If Nottingham Forest had kept their good form going when it really mattered, we'd have probably missed out on CL football.

Going on runs like Chelsea & City did and still finishing in the top fourth sums the season up.

Could also say if the manager didn't implement his full style from November on wards we could've qualified easily for the CL and maybe even given Liverpool something to think about.

The change in our playstyle from Aug-Oct to Nov-May was a large reason why CL qualification became of fraught. How a team that got one point from 6 against Ipswich still qualified for the CL sums up last season. That is also before you get to playing for draws at best against teams like City and Arsenal away.
